@sir The devil's greatest trick was convincing people he didn't exist. His second greatest trick was using PR and marketing to reintroduce himself, but with a positive reputation this time.

@sir how so? How does one inform others of something? How do services broadcast their presence?

@nergal there's a huge difference between push and pull advertising. Push ads are like spam emails and most ads on the web. Pull ads are like adding an RSS feed for a company you like to your reader, or asking your friend to suggest a VPS provider.

@sir the initial portion of providing a product or service, one has to do push advertising though. Let's say one has a service that other's neither considered or yet know the capabilities. The provider would push ads to a group of users that may be interested (say hn or lobsters). When would one switch to pull ads?

@nergal posting to e.g. HN is a form of push advertising. When you do, your content shows up in /new, not on the main page. People who go to /new to browse and upvote posts have explicitly consented to viewing content unreviewed by the community, and then decide to push it upwards for broader consumption by giving it their upvote. This is less so the case on quieter platforms (e.g. lobsters) where there's very little required between /new and the front page.

@sir let's get real here, the culprit isn't "push" advertising, it's the industry that monetizes on clicks and accompanying concepts like viewer attention as a resource.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Attention_economyI'm curious to know if you consider advertising your project on Twitter and Reddit a justified move?https://web.archive.org/web/20150211095452/https://blog.mediacru.sh/2014/07/12/State-of-MediaCrush-2014.html#finances

@interserver twitter and reddit are both effectively push mediums as well, see my rationale for HN for Reddit and consider that you only see tweets you from people you follow.

@sir Ok. So there is a rationale? In that case, distinction between push and pull advertising seems superfluous. What we need is ethical advertising, and some guidelines how to do it right. Including, for example, how your friend can opt out of recommending you that VPS. That is in fact unethical advertising, despite being "pull", because a friend, instead of refusing, might feel compelled to glance at a catalog he understands nothing of and offer you to follow on the first deal he found there.

@sir No, he might otherwise be a fine person, yet engage in unethical advertising. Push or pull ads distinction is misleading.
