@sir let's get real here, the culprit isn't "push" advertising, it's the industry that monetizes on clicks and accompanying concepts like viewer attention as a resource.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Attention_economyI'm curious to know if you consider advertising your project on Twitter and Reddit a justified move?https://web.archive.org/web/20150211095452/https://blog.mediacru.sh/2014/07/12/State-of-MediaCrush-2014.html#finances

@sir Ok. So there is a rationale? In that case, distinction between push and pull advertising seems superfluous. What we need is ethical advertising, and some guidelines how to do it right. Including, for example, how your friend can opt out of recommending you that VPS. That is in fact unethical advertising, despite being "pull", because a friend, instead of refusing, might feel compelled to glance at a catalog he understands nothing of and offer you to follow on the first deal he found there.

@sir No, he might otherwise be a fine person, yet engage in unethical advertising. Push or pull ads distinction is misleading.

@sir "I've said elsewhere that opt-in, or pull ads, are fine.""posting to e.g. HN is a form of push advertising. When you do, your content shows up in /new, not on the main page. People who go to /new to browse and upvote posts have explicitly consented to viewing content unreviewed by the community, and then decide to push it upwards for broader consumption by giving it their upvote."Are HN push ads fine or not? What was your justification for push advertising mediacru.sh?

@sir I'm quoting you in full. What's wrong with you? https://web.archive.org/web/20191104123902/https://cmpwn.com/@sir/102844215208987052

@sir "The user is consenting to read those posts and is explicitly going to HN to read them."Interesting, you consider implicit consent to be enough for the ad to qualify as opt-in. I'm pretty sure all sites that use ad revenue have a relevant TOS clause. If, according to you, consent is all it takes for the ad to pass the acceptance test, nothing of what you said about ads applies to the Web. You visit ad-supported sites of your own volition. Perhaps you mean traditional advertising + email?

@sir "Bitcoin™: It sounds cryptocool until you think about the digital ponzi scheme and electricity consumption of a small nation part"Those flaws could be excused if Bitcoin was about tackling the human money hoarding drive and spearheading positive economic policies that, for instance, encourage free software adoption and contribution. Bitcoin is anything but, and attracts people of a certain toxic mindset to boot.

@sir @bugmenot Opensource social credit system tends to be opaque and deniable. Once the project reaches a certain milestone or a critical threshold some aspects of it start to become more enshrined. No use digging our heads in the sand about that one.I see reason behind excommunication process. The community was trusting you to be there when it breaks. You wasn't, so no one wants to deal with you anymore and waste their time. This also encourages maintainers to seek replacement for themselves

@sir @bugmenot Show me someone in FOSS who openly admits to being partial. Human nature is incumbent. To be absolutely fair, opensource is much better than scene in that respect.

@sir "Professional" simply means that you code for a living. As I see you are self-employed, you can determine your own work obligations without the rest of us having to abide by your arbitrary job fitness purity testing.

@sir Ah dear internet--when your opponent straight out resorts to insults the moment he can't present a case in support of his argument and can't think of a proper rebuke.

@sir Blocking your opponents after you insult them is cowardly as well. Come on, it takes strength to admit you were wrong.
