@Jingles This is such a white point of view. Because Shriver's whiteness isn't an issue for her she doesn't think that PoC should need to identify themselves as black. Whether black people like it or not (they don't) their lives are heavily influenced by their skin colouring. They're less likely to have a good education, less likely to be mentored and encouraged by teachers, less likely to be chosen for top jobs and more likely to be sidelined into manual labour. They're more likely to live in a poorer neighbourhood with all the self esteem problems that brings. They're more often overlooked for promotion or other opportunities, in their careers and elsewhere too. They suffer harassment and abuse as well as the subtler forms of racism which are harder to combat. Just as we women endure oppression because of our sex and end up having to choose our battles otherwise we'd never do anything other than fighting back, the same goes for PoC. Now times this by being a black woman and it's considerably more difficult.Skin colour matters because white people make it matter and have done for centuries. You can't just wish the racism away and if you try to do so you're automatically dismissing the experiences and the knowledge of black people's historical and current oppression.I'm sure Shriver meant well but I really hope she's learned a whole lot better since she uttered those words.
