both of my parents are public school teachers. My mom works with far, far too little resources teaching disabled and neuroatypical kids *along with* her normal teaching load. Her job is incredibly stressful, she puts up with a lot of shit from the school admins. My dad runs a successful program that specifically helps first-gen college students(mostly children of immigrants) get into college with financial aid. They are not exceptions.

schools in america are indeed fucked but if you say shit like "teachers are cops" you're equating the damage that teachers do with the damage that cops do, and there's just no comparison there. Most people become cops because they're violent control freaks, most people become teachers because they're idealists. They get paid fucking nothing for most of their careers, work long hours, and get no respect.

@popefucker from my experience, most teachers are trying their best, but the rest of the school's management is making it so they can't be as good as they want to be.

We say "all cops are bastards" because even in principle, the idea of the police force is flawed.Police forces exist to enforce social control and protect private property, and they do some crime-fighting on the side too.Schools exist to teach kids and watch them while their parents are at work, for free. Can you imagine how much worse America would be if the literacy rate wasn't 99.9%? Can you imagine how much more fucked we'd be?

@popefucker I come from a teaching family and the amount of effort involved on behalf of students is tremendous, especially given that this area, for various reasons, is prone to a hugely diverse population, sometimes majority immigrant, and many of whom are subject to learning disabilities as a result of local companies hiring big swaths of people who are technically brilliant but socially challenged. It is not in the least bit comparable to policing.

@popefucker Is it an exercise in authority? Yes, it's an exercise in authority, but the consequences are significantly different. If teachers exercised authority the way police exercise authority, people would absolutely flip. When a cop exercises his authority against you, and I mean really exercises it, you're done for, or else literally dead. A teacher could not even dream of doing that much if they wanted to.

@Colophonscrawl yeah, exactly, and I think that teachers are less likely to be so authoritarian as well. I've had some asshole teachers and some boring teachers but also some teachers who really helped me and gave me a love of learning. Meanwhile probably the only reason the cops I've interacted with didn't throw me in jail is because I'm a white college student.
