@tk @Gina I'm gonna go ahead and say ppl don't generally have a problem with FOSS. just assholes in FOSS. the problem is, FOSS has an awful lot of assholes and it's worth taking a moment to sit down and think abbot why exactly that is

@nev @tk sorry but could someone please point me towards these assholes? Because so far I've witnessed passionate discussions on FOSS forums, but I haven't seen a lot of assholery, except for the side that screams about fossbros. It feels a lot like the discussions about 'feminazis' while I have still yet to see an actual feminazi.

@Gina @tk I mean... https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linus_TorvaldsI could suggest people give you examples, if you're okay with it, but I don't know how productive it would be.

@nev @Gina @tk lol, Torvalds as an example of a fossbro ? He chose GPL because it was convenient at the time, especially for peer-reviewing reasons. As most kernel developers do, he wants efficiency, and doesn't give a fuck about political views. The whole idea behind toxic fossbros is the same as any community that has radical members. Vegans, feminists, or anything else. You just mostly hear the toxic ones. But hey, this is how life has always been.

@b0zil @Gina @tk He's known for aggressively berating contributors on LKML in a way that goes well beyond constructive criticism. The vicious backlash against adopting codes of conduct for FOSS projects and events is another good example of "FOSSbro" attitude. So is the widespread belief that the movement is apolitical and meritocratic. This creates an environment where people are defensive of the status quo.

@nev @Gina @tk see, the fact that you consider it a "movement" is inherently wrong in the first place. Free software has never been about federating people under the same flag. You can either :- abide by its rules- fork it and apply your own CoC- ignore it and move on with your life- harass the developer to force him to get on your side (oh wait, this one seems weird)CoCs and political correctness are the enemies of efficiency in every technical domains.
