This makes it very clear. We need a #decentralized internet that is free from Central administration in every way. #orwellian ---RT @fightfortheftr@twitter.comThe White House is about to introduce a "Censor the Internet" executive orderIt would weaken CDA 230, the basic law that allows essentially all free expression onlineWhether you're Republican, Democrat, Libertarian or Socialist this should terrify youhttps://actionnetw…https://twitter.com/fightfortheftr/status/1160344567805333515

@onepict The internet is decentralized, it's the laws that dictate how it's ran.

@louwestin yes but does the entire western world need to be dictated to by Trump's administration? As I said, decentralization is what's needed.

@onepict There's also the EU setting laws, China's Great Firewall, etc.I suppose if you really wanted to bypass "the internet", you could do it via wireless transmissions over an antenna, but again you run into FCC laws about transmitting on what frequencies, how much power you can use, etc.

@louwestin and sadly unless we provide solutions to censorship then it's going to be a wee bit difficult to change our world. Part of that is ensuring that some of the backbone of the Internet isn't reliant on a us central infrastructure

@onepict Ok, I'll focus the conversation on the U.S.A.It's more complicated than the FCC proposal to manage social media. You have social media sites that set rules based on what they want or don't want censored.Hosting services have rules on what you can and not do. Some allow more freedom (Linode) others do not (inmotion hosting).Even @Mastodon has proved that it's not really a de-centralized network. Actually, it promotes a very centralized philosophy.

@louwestin @Mastodon it's the main issue I have with federalisation as a decentralized concept. There's also the issue with countries being able to shut off comms. It's why project like the freedombone are so important. The Internet needs to be rebuilt from the ground up. It's going to take more than a few developers. Regardless we need to start the work for properly decentralising the Internet. It's going to take a mixture of engineering and advocacy.
