Only relevant for Swedes I guess: but every time someone uses the plurar "ni"/"you" to refer to me I am seconds away from exploding. It's so damn common now, people in shops do it like a version of the American "sir" and I just flip out.1) We had the "du" reform (singular "you") one of the biggest most radical practical language changes in modern history.2) Even without that, I am not royalty. The plural is reserved ONLY for royalty. Its not just ignoring our history, its also incorrect.

But then again how can I flip out? I mean, the amount of time it takes to explain to a 20-something the relevance of the "du"-reform or the insult that being referred to in a mock-submissive tone will not play in my favour exactly and no matter what I do I will be a "crazy old coot who shouts about grammar" in the end.

@ohyran plural in Greek is usually the norm for someone you don't know well. But in recent times and if the other person isn't waay older it's becoming more common to quickly jump to singular (or even start with singular) without the awkward "let's talk to each other informally"I find it refreshing, and frankly more sincere.

And for those who don't know - imagine having a language that dictates how you are referred to strictly, first name, last name, "mr"/"ms"/"mrs", title etc etc - and over night some people go "no we will call EVERYONE "du" as we are all equal" going against the entire concept of a hierarchical language system. And it works! Imagine the word "mr","mrs", "ms" entirely removed from English over night.

@qwazix Yeah the plural here refers traditionally ONLY to royalty. Some parts stick though, little kids can refer to me as "farbror" ("uncle") some times , since I'm in there eyes an old man, which is kinda cute.

@qwazix Yeah royalty is/was the last hold out. It got into a big fight in the 70's because journalists referred to them as "du" as well, which got a lot of royalists angry. So many journalists still call them the proper terms ("ni" or "ers kungliga höghet"/"your royal highness")I kinda like our royal family. Not the idea of a monarchy, but the absurdity of the set up [cont]

@qwazix [...]"Ok so you control the armed forces and you're the absolute ruler who can dissolve the state if you want""ok...""But ONLY, and I can't stress this enough, if you promise to never do it!""right..."(a lot of our stuff is like that - Sweden always came inches from revolutions and then the people in power and the revolutionaries struck these absurd deals, which got everything ticking. Its why us and the EU tend to come to blows over stuff like worker pay)

@qwazix so basically we pay him and his descendants to be the royal family and they promise never to act like it outside of formal affairs like cutting ribbons, handing out awards, and generally looking freakishly archaic in photos.Worked for about a hundred years so far :DPlus they are hilarious.

@qwazix @ohyran When I took German in school, we were taught to address strangers with "Sie." On spending some time in Germany, I realised that "du" is far more common than we'd been led to believe, at least between people my age or younger. Now I'm always unsure what to say.

@ohyran @faho We have had a lot of reform in many places and people started to view things differently and now we live in the time of reaction, but since most of those people will die over the next 20 years, there may be an opportunity for a general "Du" in Germany as well.

@ohyran @jackiemoon @qwazix I haven't lived in Sweden in a long time, so I don't know what current usage is like. Regardless, I find all such Anglicisms grating, especially when a common Swedish inflection pattern fits perfectly.

@mansr @jackiemoon @qwazix Nah... a language is only as relevant as its ease of use. Hipstrar is convoluted and weird. "Fucka Upp" though makes sense as a Scandification of an English phrase. The majority and only benefit of our language is its adaptability and how swiftly it picks up new words from whichever language is popular at the moment as well creating con-joined words instead of adding to the vocabulary. The way it uses verbs to fit into basically every odd little niche is also fun.
