Some folk have put so many labels for themselves in their bio I wonder if they got a label printer for their birthday or something."Let me announce my religion, sexuality, political stances, and more so you can apply your own prejudices of these labels before getting to know me"

Lemme know if you think this is inappropriate to post on FOSStodon, considering that I've also got a CW

@brandon - it's funny how folks all want to swarm together in little circles based on labels. I like to mix it up, I want difference of opinion for better or worse. At some point we all learn from each other.

@mjjzf I worry that some folk push others away because of a misunderstanding of these labels too

@g_love exactly! And what's to stop someone from misunderstanding a label and then either attacking you from that perspective or speaking poorly about you from that perspective?

@brandon By definition it is controversial. Because there’s a group of people who would disagree.Philosophers like Alan Watts would say that such labels serve the ego and are not a reflection of one’s true nature.Even Thich Nhat Hanh would say that all that labeling isn’t important.

@brandon lol I never really thought about this until now. On one side they are clearly stating their beliefs and where they stand. For some that is being open and honest. Kudos to them for that. You're right it could lead to unprovoked attacks, but that could happen as well just from reading someone's timeline. It would also lead to only chatting with others with the same labels or ones they agree with, but not a lot can be done about that.

@jordan31 it's probably that last part that I'm worried about. You refrain from conversing from those who don't *identify* the same as you and so you don't learn as much...in general really

@brandon xactly, as humans there are so many dimensions to our personalities and perspectives who wants to be confined to a specific label?

@brandon In a sense yes. There are some that will break those barriers. It's pretty much the same way as IRL. We will converse some with those of differing ideologies but our groups remain mostly like minded people. I don't see it as a bad thing, but i think it will all work out slowly in the end.

@brandon It's not always pleasant to surround yourself with people who are too different perspective-wise. It can feel like friction. I like meeting people, but sometimes it's exhausting and doesn't lend itself as well to a microblogging format 😛It's like tapas for meeting people. It's little bites of information instead of an actual genuine conversation or an actual full meal. Both have merit, I think. This is why I still value things like Email and IRC.

@MadestMadness Oh for sure, there's definitely a balance that's needed! It's really important to surround yourself with people who think in a similar way to you. But (imagine you're in a hunter/gatherer society with this one) it's important to venture out and discover other villages for the purpose of enriching your worldview

@brandon It's very important to understand other people's experiences, and I see this as the root of empathy, honestly 🙂

@brandon sorry for late comment (its half past four at night and I can't sleep): Personally I like it. I tend to not mention my political stance because that is just an invitation to discussions that never go anywhere - but I always mention my sexuality so that people who don't like gay men can block me. Or conversely see that "oh he's just a normal asshat, like me!"The rest is just introduction or courtesy.

@brandon I usually mute people with that stuff in their bios on principle. I certainly don't care about any of it and the fact they think it's important tells me enough about them.
