Me: You were the Chosen One! You were supposed to be stable. You were supposed to bring balance to the force, not leave it in darkness.Debian: I hate you!Me: You were my brother, Debian! I loved you.

@claudiom He he he... Never really used Debian in any case. Since it has been using systemd for several versions now, probably never will except as a quick test.@polanco

@ParadeGrotesque @claudiom yeah, it's a sacrifice I did because I needed to get up and running, and it's (with Ubuntu) the more mainstream/supported distros. How's Slackware in terms of stability? Might try it for a change.

@polanco @claudiom My last #Slackware uptime (on my home server) was 260+ days. That machine is on 24/7/365. The only time it reboots is when there is an electrical power issue or a kernel update.I have had uptimes on more than a year on that machine. And it's off the shelf components, not "professional" server hardware.I have also worked with #Slackware on "real" server hardware, and had the same kind of uptime. It's really great when you need something stable.

@ParadeGrotesque @polanco I second Slackware's stability (so much alliteration lol). I still run it even though I'm using a lot of BSD lately. Makes a great server.

@ParadeGrotesque @polanco I second Slackware's stability (so much alliteration lol). I still run it even though I'm using a lot of BSD lately. Makes a great server as well as a great desktop (still run it as a desktop on an old laptop).

@ParadeGrotesque @polanco @claudiom That's pretty amazing uptime! How difficult is it to install and get slackware going?

@mindnmotion Fairly easy. Follow the docs and everything should be OK.I recommend reading the following for an overview of the installation procedure:http://www.slackbook.orgProTip: Use the "terse" installation mode.On a side note: installing an OS (any OS!) really is about four things:1) Disk configuration.2) Type of installation (CD, FTP, HTTP, etc).3) Software selection.4) Configuration items (root password, network config, running services, etc)@polanco @claudiom

@mindnmotionThe above steps is exactly how Slackware proceeds with its installation. The one thing to remember with #Slackware is this: 1) Run "cfdisk" or "fdisk" to configure the disk.2) Run "setup" to start the installation.3) In the main installation menu, run "Add Swap" to add your swap space if you configured one in step 1).That's about it, really. The rest of the installation items are pretty self-explanatory.@polanco @claudiom

@mindnmotion @ParadeGrotesque @polanco @claudiom I watched a movie while installing Slackware on my T60. It wasn't that hard; I just had to RTFM on my phone because it was unfamiliar.

@mindnmotionI think it's fair to say that if you can install a BSD and get it running, you shouldn't have much trouble with Slackware. Just don't try to pick and choose individual packages. Unselecting package sets is OK, but unselecting packages within sets might break other packages.@ParadeGrotesque @polanco @claudiom

@starbreaker True, but, should you break a package, using "slackpkg" is usually enough to rectify the problem within a few minutes.I think few people realize how "slackpkg" made #Slackware almost as easy to use as, say, Debian or Ubuntu.(At least for the base system -- additional software is something else)@mindnmotion @polanco @claudiom

@claudiom He he... #Slackware is a great gateway drug! 🤓 Started UNIX with SunOS, but my One True Love has been Slackware for a long time. #OpenBSD is a very close second, though.@starbreaker @mindnmotion @polanco

@ParadeGrotesque I've never played with "official UNIX™️", but it's always piqued my interest. Still, I'd probably prefer the free/open Unix selections. 😉 @starbreaker @mindnmotion @polanco

@ParadeGrotesque I'm lucky in that I had the foresight to avoid the problem in the first place, but slackpkg certainly made updating a fresh install of 14.2 as easy as updating Debian or OpenBSD.As for additional packages, I've been using sbopkg with slackbuilds.org. The sqg tool that comes with sbopkg makes it easy to install packages with complex dependencies because it generates queue files that you can load and run in the main tool.@mindnmotion @polanco @claudiom

@ParadeGrotesque My first exposure to UNIX was also SunOS, on a SPARCstation with a 21" trinitron display. To this day I still use sun12x22 as my console font whenever it's available. :)@claudiom @mindnmotion @polanco

@ParadeGrotesque @starbreaker @polanco @claudiom sbotools work great. If you choose xfce, kde deps are just a few.
