Please tell me about your culture shock experiences. I love hearing about them. I'm serious I want to hear them.

@ElfLord this is a dumb one but because I'm Big Atheismo, I am constantly surprised when I find out people are religious. My (incorrect) worldview is that everyone else is just as godless as me until I get evidence otherwise.

@ElfLord riding the metro in paris when no one made any attempt to step aside to let people on and off at stops. in north american cities train passengers are relentlessly efficient, but parisians just stand there while you scream "PARDON!!! PARDON!!!" and shove past them to get off the train

@ElfLord As someone who was raised in Miami and moved to England, the utter lack of water fountains and AC in many shops and spots did shock me. Like, I understand it, as the weather is so unalike, but it's not something I even thought about before.

@sexybenfranklin YES! It's so tempting to default to "oh everyone's just like me" and then it turns out they're way different haha

@wolfteeth Haha this is so true! I always think about Japan and how they have the people that push you into the train but also, they have a pretty efficient system as far as I've heard. Maybe I'm wrong.

@wolfteeth lmao I hope so. Otherwise, what are they doing?? I want that job though. Pushing people into a train. Sounds like a good way to get out your desire to push people into a train.

@ElfLord Shortly out of college, I worked with some Indian colleagues for the first time and had to navigate the Indian head nod:https://youtu.be/0RaBxH_MKQII was listing some technical requests for a developer and he was nodding his head and I though "oh no, what I'm asking for must be really tough to do."And then he said, still nodding, "No problem."... what?!? but then... what was with the...?!?I still have a fondness for disorienting moments like that.

@ElfLordAs a Mexican, learning about life in the US was... quite interesting to say the least. This came in tidbits of information that I began learning online. It was gradual, but still stunning. This will be a long thread.* Homeowners associations. People getting fined for having clotheslines in their front yards? Renting your own house is forbidden??? WTF?* Suburbs. Why on Earth would it be forbidden to open a dry cleaning service, or a @ElfLord - 1/2
