@ekaitz_zarraga @fitheach @salixlucida @gemlog Literally none of this would have gone down had the HKSAR cabinet, Beijing's HKSAR Basic Law Committee and the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress been brave enough, back in the summer of 2014, to go with a generous interpretation of Article 45.If they had, the majority in Hong Kong wouldn't have voted for a candidate that didn't "love China and Hong Kong" anyway, even in Beijing's narrow view, for a least one generation. Most people didn't *want* to rock the boat. I think e.g. Benny Tai seriously thought if you just get a couple of hundred thousand people on the streets, the establishment would see that people cared about the issue and there'd be universal suffrage by 2017. IIRC he even hoped they wouldn't have to take to the street, it was just intended as a credible threat.

@ekaitz_zarraga @fitheach @salixlucida @gemlog The police response back in 2014 didn't help either. HK police was trusted and loved by the people. A level of trust built up over the course of half a century was wrecked in a few weeks, by a few bad decisions. The crowd beating up police officers in the mall in Sha Tin the other week? Back in 2013 it would have been unthinkable. Had it happened, members of the public might have stepped in to protect the police. Not so in 2019.

@Jason_Dodd @OCRbot Sunday's #antiELAB protest was arranged by a couple of traditional organizations, which is part of the explanation for why the turnout was huge, and why things went off a bit smoother than when the swarm arranges then.I'm noting that after 2-3 months of pretty protest-friendly language, SCMP today has big headlines about how hard the police is working to keep the city stable, and the article linked above mainly focuses on whether protesters chose to be violent or not.I get the impression somebody had a stern talking-to.

That means:1. Today's main protest is expected to be at PRC Liaison Office(0) and Western Police Station, which are across the street from each other in Sai Ying Pun.2. Authorities expect it to be a small affair, or they would have closed Sheung Wan and HKU stations as well. This will be the first tear gas on west Hong Kong Island (Sai Wan) in a couple of weeks, I believe. This sounds really really bad:Because of a sudden escalation in the situation near Admiralty Station and public activities taking place in Hong Kong Island, Island Line, Tsuen Wan Line and South Island Line service has been adjusted until further notice:⢠Sai Ying Pun and Admiralty stations are closed and Island Line trains will not stop at these two stations;⢠Tsuen Wan Line trains will not stop at Admiralty Station;⢠South Island Line trains will start and stop service at Ocean Park Station, a free MTR shuttle bus service is operating between Kennedy Town and Ocean Park stations;⢠Some exits are closed at Sheung Wan, Central, Wan Chai and Hong Kong stations.I'm assuming that a situation at Admiralty means fighting at the government complex.

My public transport app is not receiving any official MTR updates yet, but from what I gather from Twitter, Wan Chai has been closed in addition to Sai Ying Pun and Admiralty. I would be surprised if Causeway Bay stays open.Ironically, after the MTR became an instrument of the police rather than a neutral mode of transport, stations have been suffering exactly the kind of vandalism they said they wanted to avoid.

@gemlog Me, in libranet.de/display/0b6b25a8-3⦠:> Most people didn't *want* to rock the boat. In the interview, he actually talks about getting 10 000 people in the street, allowing themselves to be peacefully removed, and that should bring the topic onto the agenda and get the general population more interested in the democracy issue.Pro-establishment lawmaker Priscilla Leung presciently says the occasion will encourage others to join, outside Tai's control, and he admits that that is the case, but people can do what they like. What happened was that Occupy Central with Love and Peace never happened as an event. Scholarism and others upstaged them a few days ahead of schedule, and as a result OCLP supporters more or less tagged along with what was already underway.

@gemlog It is true that Hong Kong depends on the most-favored-nation status and that the US can withdraw it, and that sanctions would hurt China and might make them think twice about restricting freedoms in HK. It makes sense to try to turn the US public's eyes on HK. It's the flag-waving and anthem-singing that seems a bit too much. But perhaps that's what it takes. The not-CIA-but-doing-CIA-stuff organizations put enough money in HK to finance maybe a dozen employees. They can talk to people, make promises and prod people, but it takes engaged locals with their own motivations to run things and create a movement, and it takes a pre-existing sentiment in the population to become the movement.

Agent Orange is a distraction. His campaign and administration have been one big circus (a la "bread and circuses"), distracting people from what Congress, the military, the cops, ICE, spooks etc are actually doing day-to-day with the power of the US state. Even cancelling the press briefings is a "look over here" tactic, using reverse psychology to keep people focused on the circus. It does suggest to me some level of desperation, that they're struggling to hold enough people's attention.

@clacke At some point, you must be thinking that 3 out of 10 years might be a too low ratio? I think I would. At least I would be considering it.

@clacke Here in the states we have a sizable chunk of people that are, due to interpretations of biblical prophecy, worried about society forcibly installing chips to oppress the population, and I've always said that was absurd because security cameras exist. Been saying that since I was a teen. The mask ban is more proof that I was right about the fact that they don't need to chip anyone. Firstly, we carry a whole computer around voluntarily. Secondly, the PR wizards can predict your location and choices with exponentially increasing accuracy. Thirdly, there are cameras everywhere also getting better at an exponential rate. Mask bans are already ubiquitous when you examine existing legislation. I strongly suspect due to robbery concerns a mask ban already existed somewhere in HK law. www.dailymail.co.uk/news/articā¦

If there's an optimal moment to open up the gates to the barracks and let the PLA out, this is probably it.

This thread federates badly, and libranet/friendica truncates it when displaying it, but if I comment here, at least the latest posts up until now will be visible at a static URL at mastosoc.

@clacke Should have taken snapshots along the way for the last two months, because fedi is so broken and I have probably dozens of posts that are now hidden in the innards of libranet.

@clacke A glimpse into a world a month ago when closing two MTR stations seemed remarkable, because they and the other 92 stations weren't closed for the coming few days.

> 2014 was the first big protest under the current system with actual demands rather than merely voicing an opinion or showing support.Correction: I have since learned that the annual July 1st march actually had concrete demands and effect in 2003, when half a million people participated and the implementation of Article 23 was scrapped indefinitely. The Civil Human Rights Front, which arranged the original huge #antiELAB protest march on 2019-06-09, was formed in 2002 in response to the proposed anti-subversion law under Article 23, and has arranged every July 1st march since 2003.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hong_Kong_1_July_marches#2003@notclacke @clacke @fitheach @ekaitz_zarraga @salixlucida @gemlog @Jojothegoodperson
