Here's a question for the native speakers:Is tortoise the same as turtle?

@DC7IA Sometimes but not always. They _can_ be synonyms but they are properly different families of species within order Testudines.

@DC7IA Non-native English speaker, but here's a simple rule of thumb that you can use: turtoises spend most of their time on land, while turtles spend most of their time in water (but lay their eggs on land). Same animal family, slight distinctions in everything else (including continents in which they're found).

@DC7IA I only ever say turtle. The only reference to tortoise I know is, "The Tortoise and the Hare." β€”which is also the only time I would use "hare" unless I was trying to make a joke or pun.

@kai Fun fact: hare is also Swedish. There you can clearly see that both languages are Germanic languages. :)
