This whole "GIMP should be renamed cause it's offensive" is a bit too much, don't you think? In my country we have a lot less "modern problems" like this one so maybe it's just the way I've been raised, but renaming a project just because it's acronym in some contexts, in some places means bad things is something I don't really agree with. Should Botswana rename it's currency just because "Pula" is the work for "dick" in Romanian and I would be offended to hold dicks in my hand? Answer me that.

@brown121407I disagree. > Should Botswana rename it's currency just because "Pula" is the work for "dick" in Romanian? There's a big difference between name acedentally sharing the same spelling as a word in a different language and a name that was picked on purpose, referencing a term in the project's primary language. Also, toots on controversial subjects like this should generally be behind a CW.

@codesections I didn't know about these toot hiding things, thanks. There is a difference, but it's actually not that big, imo. Both names accidentally share the same spelling with another word that maybe is not quite nice. The only difference is that the "bad" words are in different languages. I don't believe the GIMP devs thought "hmm, yeah, gimp is a nasty word so we're going to use it". The second meaning of the names is accidental in both cases.

@DistroJunkie @brown121407 Also agree. And why pick on GIMP and not GIT?

@jamieI brought that up a week ago with the hooha with kev... I was promptly told that its a totally different subject. I dont think so because in Australia git can be a slur.Personally I think the problem is 2 fold:1. Our language (especially the English language) has become over sexualized. Certain words have been hijacked.@DistroJunkie @brown121407

@jamie @DistroJunkie @brown1214072. There is no broad consensus with what words are a slur towards a given people group. And I know this is hard because it goes beyond english.Cant say gimp because it is against those with a disability or because its sexualized. Can say git even though it can be a slur towards the elderly and senile.I dont like either word. It just seems whoever is the loudest with their beef, seems to dictate what is acceptable instead of a consensus of what is acceptable

@davey @DistroJunkie @brown121407 Probably a bit of both. I really struggle to have any interest in the drama at all - it's just people shouting at each other and a big waste of energy. I think the last paragraph of your second post is bang on.

@jamieI have started to mute and unfollow people because of it. On one level yes these things are important but it being constant is draining and unproductive@DistroJunkie @brown121407
