       Concerning Gimp (the program) - I have no game in the "its ableist or not" debate and don't weigh in on either side, but ignoring that - it IS a rubbish name. It's just ... "oh I gimped that image" - is not a very good way of replacing "photoshopping".Brand recognition? Hell no. There is none. Explaining wth kind of app it is? None. The name have nothing going for it except history and the history argument is kinda weak sauce at this point.

       @ohyran I really think we shouldn't be pushing for another brand to be used as a verb, but rather have a generic verb that works for all of the different programs: GIMP, Krita, etc

       Another anecdotal argument - the library my husband works for was having a "computer graphics for kids" event and chose an online app (Sumo) instead because "Gimp kinda sounds weird".

       @Matter True "edit" would work - the point is that the name isn't doing much right now.If that is the banner the devs want to congregate around thats fine of course at the same time I think people suggesting a fork following upstream is a good solution.

       @ohyran yeah that carries as much weight as stallman keeping that tasteless “joke”. Just move on, get with the times. Maybe I’ll recommend it a bit more, if people won’t giggle when I tell them the name. 🤭

       @ohyran I used to not care about the name until I thought about my visceral reaction to "Mongo DB" which would be a UK equivalent term.Now, I'm completely won over by GNU Imp and I think I'm just going to call it that regardless of what the project does.

       @ohyran Why NOT take a side on the fact that it's a slur that actual, vulnerable people are getting thrown at them every day?I mean, what's so scary about saying it's not OK to use a term like that?What, exactly, are you afraid of?Because it's not like it's an esoteric or arcane point.        @ohyran the only thing that seems to me that's worth something is all the "how to do X in GIMP" content on the internet that's going to become hard to find...Otherwise, Glimpse is so much better...
