@kemonineI think this is the first time I've heard it phrases this way. Seems so obvious in retrospect.

@ajroach42 The key piece most forget is you can be compelled to give up your biomentrics w/o questionHowever there is a gray area when it comes to passwords. Our personal secrets and 5th amendment (or equivalents) and all that jazz

@emsenn @ajroach42 š Fun thought experimentCan you be compelled to be fingerprinted or dna tested? (Hint: in the USA that's a yes)Can you be compelled to give up a password (Hint: in the USA that's a 5th amendment gray area)š

@kemonine I'm trying to be more transparent about my activism history but I've been compelled to thumbprint stuff. There's an important thing ot know about your right to refuse to give a password: two cases have successfully argued that if the information is reasonably known without your aid, the act is not self-incrimination and can be compeled. (not a lawyer, phrasing is my own) @ajroach42

@emsenn That's my understanding as well. However, there have been judges who compelled password give ups in the USA with jail time associated. It's a terrible gray area and requires some solid attorneys at times.@ajroach42

@kemonine I did and do counter-surveillance and -censorship stuff which my country decided was p much the same as terrorism, since i might do it here. Even though i'd only, to then, done it to enemy states, and had a pretty good track record as a Good American.

@kemonine What stuck in my mind to explain biometrics: itās only useful to disallow access (like for a casual snoop) but not for authentication of a identity. So itās more like a pre shared key ;)

@daftwullie only if that key is pure identity. even then its a tenuous connection

@kemonine oh, definitely. IMHO biometrics are only useful in the ādamn I lost my phone in public transportā and not in the āno, mr policeman, I wontāt give you access, sirā kind of situation.

@daftwullie exactly why I have a long password on my phone.I worry less about losing my phone than having the police or border patrol seize it. I can replace my phone, I cant undo the damage done by the police.

@kemonine I do use both. Biometrics are so nice and easy for everyday use. But if Iām traveling (especially across borders) or Iām going even near a protest march I disable biometrics.

@daftwullie good callbe mindful of dhs in the USA though. they have some terrifying reach beyond borders.some States are 100% within their jurisdiction and.... avoid biometrics as a rule if you're on their turf

@kemonine I try to skip the US since a couple of years ;) For occasions where there is an unexpected encounter with the police, I use the emergency function of my iPhone: not only will this call for help but it will also disable biometric identification.

@kemonine Nah, they are worse than usernames actually. Biometrics are Personal Identifiable Information that you cannot change of. They should never have been digitized.
