yknow all those poor souls who start using #Linux and then an update fucks everything up on their freshly installed Ubuntu and they have no idea what to do?well, consider this: functional distros like #GuixSD where you can roll back upgrades _could_ be more beginner friendly

@grainloom not when installers feel archaic, drivers are unavailable and there's not the software that people expect, but Guix and Nix are solid enough as package managers. They just need better packages and better packaging.

@grainloom @espectalll There was someone (who was on the Fediverse) who was setting up a user-friendly Guix 'spin'. I don't recall the name though or know what happened with the project.

@_emacsomancer @grainloom this doesn't seem to fix much, the packages (including kernel, browser, etc) are mostly the same

@grainloom Presently doing arch-or-bust on a box due to exactly this because the Ubuntu random breakage experience was not user friendly at all and resulted in them buying a new computer (that they hate) just to escape it back to windows. :( bad-distro pain is real. Maybe I'll take the Guix leap next time this happens.

@espectalll @grainloom I don't know much about it. It at least seems to be for hardware pre-installed with Guix, though that wouldn't alleviate all of the user-interface issues of Guix of course.I think the creator is on the Fediverse @franz

@grainloom One of the most common issues people run into (if they manage to install the Guix System distribution) is running third-party programs that expect a "normal" Linux file system layout. I'm not sure what the best plan of attack for this is, but it's definitely a roadblock for many, myself included.

@kk @grainloom Maybe those could be run using flatpak? But I'm not sure what software has such requirements. Generally configure/make/make-install software Just Works in Guix/Nix.

@kk i guess they too need to be packaged and/or improved to work with different layoutsdo you have an example of such a program?

@grainloom This may or may not count since its already packaged, but I was told by someone on IRC that Guix's Godot engine package was somewhat out-of-date, and of course the binaries won't without ELF and/or LD_LIBRARY_PATH tweaking. One that I packaged for myself about a year ago was IQMol, one of many molecule editing and visualization tools. The provided binary only ran on FHS-compliant systems, and the source code had a long list of hardcoded paths to libraries in an include file, though I could just be misunderstanding how qmake and co. work.

@kk hmm, i guess having a container that can run stuff unmodified binaries might be niceon the other hand, Guix lets you package binaries that are relocatable to anywhere on the file system

@grainloom @kk The ideas of github.com/genuinetools/binctr are intriguing to me and I would like to subscribe to their newsletter.
