I was websurfing https://www.oreilly.com. I remember buying books from them maybe ten years ago. There are no books on there anymore? ๐ค Do they not publish books anymore? Have they pivoted to selling auto parts?

@sajith Ahh, that's how people do it.TBH I've seen more spoof books than real ones in recent years. Like you, I haven't bought a O'Reilly book for many years.O'Reilly have a shop sub-domain for online books and videos:http://shop.oreilly.com/

@fitheach Figured by a bit of web searching. ๐ I have always associated them with books, so I was quite surprised by the fact that there's no mention of books on their main site. I suppose that business is not very profitable anymore.

@sajith Dead tree books probably aren't so profitable due to competition from the digital variety.

@fitheach I have bought a few books of either variety, but it's been a while now. Most of my recent purchases are from Manning, Wiley, Humble Bundle book sales, and the such. By visiting their main page, you wouldn't know that they sell digital books either. I guess their Conferences and what was previously marketed as Safari provides a more sustained income.

@sajith @fitheach Every year, thereโs an array of O'Reilly books (of the dead-tree variety) displayed (and bought from) in building H at FOSDEM.I haven't bought any of their books, but I fondly remember the beautiful TheSansMono fonts used to typeset code in those (apart from the portrait of animals, of course).

@rajeesh @sajith Do the animals on O'Reilly books have any significance?Pythons on Python books, of course. Perl doesn't have any obvious links to any animals. However, a quick image search suggests that O'Reilly typically used camels, or other ungulates, for Perl books.Maybe because Perl gives people the hump? ๐ #Perl #Python

@choroba Oh, come on, lighten up. The hump comment was a joke. In over 7,000 posts I've never made a joke about Perl, before now. So, I'm not exactly making it a habit. ๐ For the avoidance of doubt: Perl is a great language.

@alephnull That is the case with many programming languages for many people. If you have a goto (sic) language it is likely it either fits with your thinking or, over time, you have adapted to it.It might be like the old adage of owners looking like their dogs.@choroba

@rajeesh Ooh, not sure. O'Reilly's "Learning the vi and Vim Editors" first edition also came out in 1986, and it had a tarsier on the front cover. O'Reilly's Nutshell books were also available at this time, and possibly earlier.@sajith
