@kf never tried neomutt, but I can compare it to mutt proper(1) aerc's UI is not connected to its network code, so flaky networks don't render the UI unusable(2) the embedded terminal makes it so you can write a reply while browing other emails or seeing new stuff as it comes in(3) same feature lets you view emails in less instead of the crappy built-in mutt viewer(4) the design of the keybindings makes a lot more sense(5) cool filtering tools + embedded terminal makes it so you can e.g. read HTML emails with elinks or add syntax highlighting to patchesCheck out the demos from this article:https://drewdevault.com/2019/04/15/Status-update.htmlThere's already an AUR package, aerc2-git

@sir how well does it deal with large amounts of mail in multiple directories, the sort of thing you get when using procmail?I've heard mutt had some problems with that.

@sir @kf curious about this built in terminal. how is that implemented? how is it different to just using the current terminal like what mutt or git does ?

@twee @kf the built-in terminal can use a fraction of the parent terminal instead of taking over the whole thing. This way, you can still tab over to your inbox and check new messages while you're working on writing your email. It works similarly to how tmux works

@sir imap+insecure fixed reading my (ProtonMail) emails in aerc — awesome! I am digging around the man page and source, but I don't see anything similar for smtp. aerc asks me to add starttls to accounts.config, and if I do, it complains about the untrusted cert. Any tips? @kf Did you get it working?

@stick @kf you just want smtp://, no starttls option set. If you can turn off the bridge's STARTTLS support, it should work. It's designed to be hard to set up insecurely.

@sir @kf I'm not aware of any method to change the bridge settings, unfortunately. Is there any way to configure aerc to allow me to bypass starttls instead? Or accept an "insecure" cert? That second idea sounds like a great option for both IMAP and SMTP!

@stick @kf the second idea sounds like a great option for making aerc insecure. Try hydroxide instead of the proprietary bridge instead:https://github.com/emersion/hydroxideOr consider switching to a mail provider which cares about free software and open, standard protocols 😉
