       @xenophora Ugh. Paying someone for their training and expertise is one thing, but eye exams need to be covered under single payer medical systems.

       @erinbee Yep. Plus walk into Legacy and it looks like a fucking luxury hotel with sparkly new interiors and a giant widescreen with a former supermodel pitching $100/oz. "discount" youth creams which don't work. I wish I was making this up. (What does my wrinkly skin even have to *do* w/eyecare? WTF is going on?)

       @xenophora I hate going for an eye exam and then having the doctor try to push me to buy glasses from their associated shop so they earn a commission. I already paid $85 for the exam, get off my back, I'm not spending $200+ on frames. (And they can also bite me with the fear mongering about ordering online.)

       @erinbee @xenophora what's the fear-mongering about? I don't wear glasses so I don't know

       @xenophora its about $31 over here (although various categories of people get them free, namely students, seniors, those who are already on welfare benefits and people like me who are /that/ short sighted that its beneficial to both the patient and wider society their eyesight is corrected (without contacts or specs I would not see 50mm in front of me, let alone be able to use a computer or drive)

       @vfrmedia Are eyes (like teeth) less covered than what's usually classed as "General Practice" medicine?

       @xenophora yes, that is the case although the NHS will always treat emergencies for free and its slightly easier to get discounts for ophthalmological than dental treatment: https://www.moneyadviceservice.org.uk/blog/am-i-entitled-free-eye-test-nhs-optical-vouchers

       @vfrmedia Ah, thanks. (Even back in the days of LJ and Usenet, etc. I was in fan communities with tons of people from other countries and every time someone from the U.S. confided a medical problem I just *know* the former had a private chat space where they all talked about how bugfucked this country is. :/ )
