I really want to like #GNOME but when Gnome devs post shit like this, it just makes me want to say fuck it.https://stopthemingmy.app/

@mattYeah I agree... Feels like the same mentality of the Gnome devs making UI decisions that are out of step with what most of their users want.

@matt tbh I get the frustration when a third party theme breaks your app but being able to theme your DE and get a unified look is part of the whole freedom thing. Anyway dont see why gnome is getting in on this whole thing though.

@willywonkball the issue as I see it is GTK itself. GTK does not support themes at all in the way end users expect. And that is the problem.Rather than encourage app developers to use placeholder colors or color pallettes like $bgcolor, $header, $body, or placeholder items like $button, $textbox, they actively encourage instead to hardcode these things in place

@willywonkball and I understand the need for more complex things, but I just don't see why it has to be so hard

@willywonkball I mean, GTK apps use CSS right? The whole frickin point of CSS is to do drop-in theming

@matt interresting I will be honest and say I have no clue how gtk works but the first thing you described with placeholders seems super logical to me. Strange that its shit and then its the app developers fault. Seems like gtk3 needs an overhaul

@willywonkball they have a perfect opportunity with GTK4, but they don't seem to care

@matt GTK4 is in the make? Also whats the point of building a theming engine if its shite at the one thing its supposed to do?

@matt @willywonkball on one hand, I do get the desire to theme your desktop to your liking. However, as you mentioned, gtk doesn't really support theming as of now and different themes can break gtk applications.Obviously, there are ways to fix it, the gtk developers are working on this project for nothing in return out of their free will.Think you have a good idea on how to implement it ? Well, you are welcome to contribute code.
