Look, I get it, you don't want people using proprietary platforms at all, not even to get your stuff, but charging money on those proprietary platforms whilst you keep it free on FOSS platforms means you'll frustrate and alienate a lot of users because unfortunately, the proprietary platforms just work, the FOSS ones don't sometimes. This seems to be a trend amongst FOSS developers they make decisions to do or not do something whilst not considering the impacts of their decisions.. 1/2

and I get it, I was an open source advocate for a long time, I still am to some degree, but making decisions whilst not considering users who either can't pay if you go that route or those that can't tech support but are expected to (I mean have you ever tried to get help from the open source community? It's vile.) Whilst not actually giving users what they ask for or fixing legitimate problems is just absurd and goes against what _should_ be the spirit of open source. 2/2

@UnclearFuture The average FOSS project is one or two developers. They don't have impact assessment focus groups, like the megacorps. They don't have market research departments or customer satisfaction teams or user experience gurus.

@bob @UnclearFuture The nice thing is, they care more about their users than their profits. Pretty sure the fedilab dev is open to discuss this thing. Also let's not forget that this pushes the ecosystem out of the local maximum of everyone using Google Play and into the much better situation where they are at the very least _aware_ of alternative app stores.

@bob @UnclearFuture People also pirate apps and now the ones who do are pushed to try F-Droid and next time their grandparents ask them to install something, they might go to F-Droid first.

@grainloom @bobSure, and that's good. However, I really think that they should offer alternatives for when f-droid doesn't work, which apparently this specific case does, you can get the apk quite easily, though I'm not sure if it checks for updates like f-droid and some apk installs I've come across do.

@grainloom @bobSure, all I'm saying is that, in order for f-droid to be a viable alternative to the play store it needs to Just Work all the time like the play store does and not expect people to do their own tech support when it doesn't.

@UnclearFuture @bob And the only way it will Just Work is if it has users who test and support it and developers who contribute to it and people who spread the word about it.
