@zx :oh_no: There is enough NIH already with language specific package managers trying to do everything.Guix and Nix already solve this issue much better than things like pyenv, languages should just target them. Maybe provide their own Guix channels if absolutely necessary.

@null ah hec. i remember reading a trans guy's post about doing Cecil Palmer lines, which seemed like an objectively great time. but i guess training can't always be fun.

Riseup should call their call for donations "crowfunding".

@thornAvery @vidak For Guix I found that the only way to learn it is by just doing it. Patch reviews are very informative.

@vidak @thornAvery For that you'll probably have to get into the weeds of Shepherd services. Also Chris's vision of an OCAP operating system is very appealing and I think that could be one of Guix's big features. But also reducing closure sizes is desperately needed. Any day now I'll get started on splitting up packages more and make the install size rival Alpine's. ....aaaany day. Yup.

@thornAvery @vidak @cwebber 's last FOSDEM talk is the most relevant answer to that probably: https://fosdem.org/2021/schedule/event/spritelygoblins/but TLDW: object capabilities. what you have a reference to is what you can modify.

@cincodenada Nix and Guix are both package managers that also have distros built around them (NixOS and Guix System, respectively). You can install either (or both!) on top of any existing distro.I'd recommend trying Guix. Some things might not work, but IMHO it's the most *interesting* distro. It's not just a preconfigured version of an existing distro. If you do run into something that doesn't work, please open a bug report. There is also the help mailing list for when you aren't quite sure if something is a bug.

@xerz Because apparently GNOME is a pain to package on non-GNOME-sanctioned distros. There are people working on GNOME 40 support though, but AFAIK even the last GNOME upgrade took a good while.

@xerz :blobshrug: It's probably that stuff like configuration management that users would expect to work would be borked. I've seen such bug reports very recently in relation to dconf.

Still looking into this. Here is one English report on the situation with the planned Fudan (a top university in #China ) campus in #Hungary .I know a bunch of leftists love China, but then again it's not their countries where China's influence manifests the most, so I'm curious what they think of this.https://hungarytoday.hu/hungarys-planned-fudan-university-budapest-location-faces-backlash/

saw two cops and a soldier (with a fucking automatic rifle, because that's super necessary) talk to an old alcoholic man on Mars Ter today. they didn't bring him in, just told him to get lost and not litter, I think, so like, okay, not as bad an outcome as I feared, but there were a bunch of people walking by them without masks, and they didn't stop any of them. but when one Romani guy walks by too confidently (you know, that Cool Guy walk), of course he gets stopped and his papers are checked.well, at least they didn't shout and seemed pretty calm. didn't hear what they were saying, so they may have been more or less intimidating that it seemed. but still. don't send a cop to do a social worker's job.

@Mopsi bittorrent still exists. watch it for free, if it's good, get the DVD, or the merch, or whatever. if it's very good, maybe even get the blu-ray.

@paulfree14 the clients are much nicer and the content tends towards a high signal low noise ratio
