Life changing tip:Notepad++, emacs, and JEdit all have box select mode. As in, you can select a VERTICAL section and then edit all those line AT THE SAME TIME. Changing a label you use on 18 lines? FIX IT ALL AT ONCE.

@Canageek I don't quite understand how that's better than search+replace, especially how box selection works when the lines aren't aligned.

@grainloom Each line doesn't have to be the same. Example from what I was working on right now in notepad++.Other thing I just used it for: To change if I had a space or not between the -- and the numbers.

@grainloom Its also useful for when you've copied and pasted lists of things: Used it here to change every Pd1 to a Pd2. I could find and replace but I cant do Replace All or it would hit both text boxes, and this way I don't have to hit replace over and over.

@grainloom Can, but often trickier to define what you want to do. Also you can't use that to add something when nothing is there already, like how I added // there: There wasn't even whitespace there yet ^^

@grainloom Also find and replace it GOOD, I do like my regex, but writing a safe find/replace when you have a lot of similar entries and you only want to edit one of them is hard, and this is easy.

@grainloom Yeah, I do a lot of editing of CVS files and formatted data like *.res and *.cif, so its very useful for that. Also: align command in emacs and boom, everything is aligned. Also great for LaTeX tables, which is what I was working on.

@Canageek Geany also does vertical editing; that was a feature on my "need" list when I picked it, along with code folding (and some other features, it's been a while; I forgot the rest).https://www.geany.org/:blobheartcat: vertical editing

@philnelson @Canageek @DialMforMara also BBEdit. It's a cool feature, and easy to overlook. I keep forgetting about it.

@grainloom (Also emacs has an align command that is SO FREAKING NICE. I have no idea how it works so well, but damn does it do it. I'll often open a file in emacs after bashing together a table, align it, then go back to TeXStudio or Notepad++)
