I'm curious: Do non-scientists know what the Kelvin scale is?

Headache today so not pushing myself. Discovered the chemical safety board has a YouTube channel detailing accident investigations.Best quote: Saying most accidents are due to worker errors is like saying most falls are for to gravity

@fatboy I would recommend Subway Tooter as another Mastodon client alternative

@ajroach42 I hear back in Windows 3.1 you could define an entire text box with like one line or something like that. You just had to tell it what the buttons you wanted were and what they should do and the OS would do everything else for you

@lispi314 @ajroach42 Even a limited GUI would help I think. I think it would be a lot less intimidating to people if they could click a desktop icon, them paste the file names into a box that pops up, then have to deal with the command line

@CarlCravens it can be hard to tell which of these drive gameplay though, as someone who's installed many, many fallout and Skyrim mods designed to smooth gameplay, and removing some of the limits definitely made the game better.Ex adding a mod where you can send things back to your base it well it is okay if you don't have to stop the fun dungeon exploration to dump another load of scrap back at your community.

@CarlCravens Likewise OpenXCom removes a lot of the hardcoded limits of the original and it greatly improves things. I think that the friction needs to have a point, and a lot of the friction in games just comes from either "we've always done it this way" or "We didn't have three years to play it and tweak the interface like modders do"

@CarlCravens I have been wondering how Mojangg supports that, you'd think everyone would HAVE minecraft by now, but I guess at a certain point the game is large enough that it can rely on new people reaching gaming age and getting new accounts for long term funding?

@CarlCravens Fair, and console players have to buy it new on each new console generation I guess, but you think if that was their main funding they'd have moved more development over to bedrock, when I know bedrock players are SUPER salty about bugs getting patched on Java way before they are patched on bedrock.

@CarlCravens I only started a couple of versions ago, and don't play a lot, but the core content seems pretty frozen, the new stuff seems to mostly be added around the edges, like you don't have to mess around with the deep dark or new mobs unless you want to, and stuff like the new terrign generation and increased build height I think helps a lot? Also, you can still play older versions, there are still mod communities focusing on a few specific versions as I understand it.

@kelbot I saw a calculation once that in plain text, you could fit every book in the library of congress on one CD-ROM. Now, I imagine there are a LOT more books now due to self publishing, but yeah, that seems a good place to start. Also if you don't mind 90s era compression, you can fit a LOT of audio in a gigabyte; the rule I was told back then was about 1 MB/minute, and with modern codecs you could probably get that same quality with smaller file sizes.

@kelbot I generally think that @ajroach42 goes *way* too far in their experiments, and that no one will use it if the quality is that much worse then a torrent or streaming site, you know? But like the modern equivalent of a MP3 at 128 kbps would be a lot smaller and 95% of people can't tell the difference between that and lossless.

I mostly missed my chance, but I raised I should start doing scientific supply unboxing videos. What is it today? Two borosilicate powder funnels and a box of latex gloves! (I have no idea if they're actually be an audience for this, but now that the lab is set up I'll be receiving shipments on a much less regular basis, so I really missed my chance to make a lot of these videos)
