it's 3 years since mozilla chose to implement DRM/EME despite the wishes of their userbase

@rain Irony: They're so bad at it that I still can't reliably watch Netflix on Firefox, so I still use Chrome for that.DRM has no effect on anyone who doesn't watch streaming media, but sweet Cthulhu the whining levels really don't make it worth it. Let the freeloaders not watch anything.

@mdhughes I think DRM does affect everybody, even people who don't use it.

@rain How? Does it corrupt your SOUL for someone else to be able to watch copyrighted media in the same browser?

@mdhughesEvery extra line of code increases the likelihood of a vulnerability.Also, a buggy DRM implementation prevents you from legitimately watching content (as you have noticed).By implementing DRM, Netflix are accusing you (their paying customer) of being thieving scum who can't be trusted - you want to have dealings with a corporation that thinks that way about you?@rain

@oshwm @mdhughes @rain Netflix blocking VPNs also exposes their users. That’s not traditionally thought of as DRM, but I think should be included as it’s used to enforce per-country content restrictions.

@mdhughes @rainDRM has never gone wrong has it - Amazon famously remotely wiped George Orwell's 1984 from Kindle's around the globe because it is still copyrighted in the US even though it was in the Public Domain in most other places.

@ddIt also allows ISPs and others to gain insights into how you live your life by inspecting your traffic when you are forced to abandon using a VPN.@mdhughes @rain

@mdhughes @rain not true, DRM is a creeping cancer. especially in the form of binary blobs

@epicmorphism @rain @mdhughes Also DRM means people can't watch media THAT THEY OWN on any other hardware than the issuing company sanctioned.

@irina @epicmorphism @rain @mdhughes DRM means people DON'T OWN media. That's the issue.
