Twitter founder Jack Dorsey responded to the question 'How hard is it to get rid of Nazis from Twitter' with that that Nazism was “hard to define”."What came across most strongly, chillingly, was the complete absence of emotion – any emotion – in Dorsey’s face, expression, demeanour or voice."

"on a 15-hour flight on a private jet with 16 other people and Zuckerberg never said a word to anyone for the entire duration.""journalist Kara Swisher, repeatedly asked Zuckerberg how he felt about Facebook’s role in inciting genocide in Myanmar – as established by the UN – and he couldn’t or wouldn’t answer."

"they’re not fit to hold these jobs or wield this unimaginable power.""If they don’t feel guilt, shame and remorse, if they don’t have a burning desire to make amends, their boards, shareholders, investors, employees and family members need to get them out."Sounds like there's a bunch of psychopaths running the show...

@webmind There are a few problems with this narrative. The brexit vote had a lot more history behind it than just ads on Facebook. Yes the EU may have funded certain public construction projects, but who gets access to them and who actually received the cash? My guess is that it wasn't the local people. When people say they havn't seen any benefit from EU membership often that's true. It's actually worse than the Cambridge Analytica scandal. That company is just the tip of the iceberg of an industry of influence. Google also does a lot of surveillance and places a lot of ads, and how accountable are they to anyone? In past elections the tabloids boasted about their degree of influence over election results. It used to be said that whichever party could get the Murdoch press on its side would always win.As for the shocking referendum hate ads, I think this shows a degree of naivety from a liberal perspective. Ads like these demonizing minorities and scapegoating foreigners pre-date the internet era, it's just that they would typically appear as leaflets in poor working class areas that liberals would be entirely absent from. Whether ads like that appear on Facebook or through your letter box doesn't make a great deal of difference, and political parties laundering money to shady publishing outfits to create and distribute such ads is also not something unique to Facebook or the internet.

@bob @webmind a heuristic that has served me well: if it's in a TED talk, it's not worth listening to

@lupine @bob In general yes, this seemed to have a different tone though. I guess the guardian article about it is more interesting as it's about talking in 'the lions den'

@webmind "You’re on a ship, Anderson said, and there’s an iceberg ahead. And you say… ‘Our boat hasn’t been built to handle it’ and we’re waiting and you are showing this extraordinary calm and we’re all worried but we’re outside saying, ‘Jack, turn the fucking wheel.'"

@webmind These platforms are algorithmically designed to maximise *any kind* of engagement; all they're interested in is productising that. The only success metric is market penetration for the businesses that are leveraging user data from the platform. We unfortunately exist in a system that actively encourage this kind of outcome as a feedback loop. Dispassionate buck passing is the only way to sustain growth - and to them growth is everything.

@webmind the way the system works is that they can be ousted or even held liable if they do or say something that disadvantages the stock market value of the businesses they run. To be a CEO of a publically held company, you don't HAVE to be a psychopath, but you have to be able to pretend to be one.
