Best free software for creating diagrams from text files (e.g. not a drag-and-drop like Dia)?

@sir graphviz is the only one I knowi've been looking for a more powerful replacement but there seems to be none forthcoming

@kurisu @sir I think I also used some LaTeX stuff from time to time (lost with my previous laptop sadly but there is examples online) but it’s basically locked in it.

@sir I've seen this sort of thing done with org-mode in Emacs using a system called "ditaa"http://ehneilsen.net/notebook/orgExamples/org-examples.html#sec-5-1and http://ditaa.sourceforge.net/might be an option, but I've never used this combo, only seen it in passing while trying to absorb what org-mode can do.

@kurisu @sir graphviz is the only reasonably-full-featured one I know too but the output isn't exactly pleasant to look at.I really want something with graphviz's collision avoidance algorithms but pretty output like the json railway diagrams. Haven't found any yet.

@flussence @sir @kurisu For certain types of diagram, I have been using blockdiag.com/en/index.html and been reasonably happy with the output. blockdiag - simple block-diagram image generator seqdiag - simple sequence-diagram image generator actdiag - simple activity-diagram image generator nwdiag - simple network-diagram image generators

@spelk @sir > You need the latest Java runtimes (JRE) to use ditaa. The best anti-aliasing can be achieved using Java 1.5 or higher.... so I don't actually need the latest JRE. 😀That example diagram looks so pretty!

@czero1 @sir I think this is about boxes-and-arrows diagrams, not about X/Y plots?
