I'd like to thank Microsoft for making Windows 7 an annoying piece of software that pretends to be smarter than you.If it wasn't for this, I wouldn't have switched to Linux in high school, and switching later on would probably be harder.

@lordbowlich yeah, compared to Vista and 8, it was good. But I skipped vista. I upgraded from WinXP straight to Win7, and then one day I wanted to set up authenticated network shares. On WinXP it'd be no problem - make sure accounts on both PCs have the same password, right click directory, share, change one option done.On Win7, it was advanced -> unrecommended -> yes I really want to -> no I don't want your recommended settings -> yes I know what I'm doing. And then it didn't work IIRC.

@Wolf480pl Now I'm having flashbacks.I remember Microsoft transitioning more and more settings behind automagical wizards that never actually did what they purported and were a pain when you actually knew the settings (particularly for networking) that you wanted to set up.

@Wolf480pl Windows 7 was tolerable for me. Windows 8 and 10 on the other hand, I had the same feeling as you did with Windows 7.

@Wolf480pl I should clarify: Windows 7 before the whole "free windows 10" bullshit came along.

@Normandy well, I didn't have that feeling most of the time. Only when I tried to configure something slightly advanced in windows itself, like network shares and stuff. For most of my everyday stuff, (that is: coding in Eclipse or Visual C++, making maps in in Valve Hammer Editor, testing stuff in Minecraft or HL2, browsing websites related to Minecraft and HL2 modding) Windows 7 was just fine. But it wouldn't let you dive deep into its settings.

@Wolf480pl I suppose I wasn't that much of a power user back when I still used it. Only really went all out on customising everything post-Windows 10.

@Wolf480pl The last Windows I used, was Vista. Before OpenBSD, I was a Linux-only user. No regrets here :)
