@Linux Showed Ubuntu MATE to my Grandad. After deciding against it, we rebooted to Windows. After waiting for it to launch (~4 minutes) he instantly remarked "It looks a lot less sharp than I remember". Ubuntu MATE was running in 1440x900... He didn't end up switching unfortunately :( Too much new to learn, even though the biggest issue is the new learning every update, every few weeks.

@cccam Well, you did try, man 👍 Possibly something was kinda planted and the grand dad asks again about Ubuntu if something goes royally wrong with Spydows...

@Linux One time I wanted to install an app from the Microsoft Store. It wouldn't install. I looked up the error code, turned out my Windows was out of date. Went to go update it. Kept failing. Looked around for hours trying to find out what was wrong. Turned out the System Reserved Partition was full, so I just had to resize it.An error message would have been pretty helpful.

@sproid @cccam Ubuntu MATE with Mutiny layout though is very suitable for new comers, seniors and juniors. Mutiny layout looks just about like the legendary Unity and is hard to mess up.

@Linux @sproid I was going with Redmond because it's Windows, and they're fine with that. I'm not quite sure the specific reasons behind the no, but it was decided before I showed them. They were happy after I gave them a printed slideshow, but then in the 2 days after they changed their minds. I believe it's due to the fact everyone they know uses Windows 10, and so does my Mum (who swears down her college course doesn't let her use anything but MSOffice)

@Linux Was out with my wife at a cafe doing some work. She was using her Windows 10 laptop connected to her phones hotspot and I was using Ubuntu on mine.Windows 10 decided to download updates which finished her monthly data plan and asked me to use my laptop to finish her work. Went back home later and asked me to install Ubuntu for her.

@boilingsteam @Linux Yeah, also with Gnome she didn't find it hard. Very streamlined easy to use desktop environment. Much easier to change settings compared to Windows 10.

@mdbekhit @boilingsteam It is of quite popular view to see Gnome as some sort of "default Linux DE" or a good starting point for new comers. It is very important to first get people to get into Linux, there after they will eventually find more options and start configuring themselves, if needed.

@Linux @boilingsteamTotally agree with you. The reason I always recommend Gnome first is because it is a complete package, it includes built in compositor and desktop sharing without the need to install any packages unlike a lot of other distros. This is daunting for newcomers who might have screen tearing or need remote assistance. Also it doesn't overwhelms the user with a lot of customization options such as KDE. I am not against KDE but it is suited more to power users not casuals.
