Software freedom is just one struggle on a very long list of digital liberation efforts. Yes, we are making progress in that field. The next steps however - hardware freedom and decentralization - will keep us busy for many years to come. Then we have to think about self-determination, addictive designs and AI. We are losing that struggle already because our brains are way too easy to manipulate. Websites say "click here!" and we do it. Favs feel good. AIs will find it easy to predict that.

If we don't stop this trend of surrounding us with more and more addictive and interconnected technology, we are just few years away from becoming mere AI fodder. Our behavior will be constantly recorded and used to train them, and we are getting omnipresent dopaminergic rewards to keep us going. The resulting AI power will be worth more than gold. Advertisement companies and autocrats will pay billions. Our own behavior will be turned against us and only a few hundred chosen ones will profit.

No one really foresaw this development. In fiction, technology was often very visibly bad. There were attack surfaces to identify and fight it. You could win or lose.In reality, people are craving smartphones and social networks. For many people, giving up phone use is more difficult than giving up smoking. And people happily pay for more and more outrageous technology. The momentum and the invasiveness of this development make this so frightening. Authoritarianism will become child's play.

We have to adopt a new way of thinking, write new manifestos, to counter this threat. Technology made us more powerful than ever - with the right tools, it is easy to send encrypted messages around the globe, without leaving traces, in an instant. This was never before possible. Why are we not using this potential? Why are we letting ourselves get subjugated by addictive crap?We need to take back control - not just in meatspace, not just in cyberspace - but first and foremost in mindspace.
