@bob I hope too - that statement was based on the assumption that it can't possibly get much more centralised, unless Google, Microsoft, Twitter, Facebook etc. merge to one big ultra-zaibatsu.Our countermovement is still negligible in its effects, unfortunately. The big companies are not scared of the Fediverse or XMPP.

Software freedom is just one struggle on a very long list of digital liberation efforts. Yes, we are making progress in that field. The next steps however - hardware freedom and decentralization - will keep us busy for many years to come. Then we have to think about self-determination, addictive designs and AI. We are losing that struggle already because our brains are way too easy to manipulate. Websites say "click here!" and we do it. Favs feel good. AIs will find it easy to predict that.

If we don't stop this trend of surrounding us with more and more addictive and interconnected technology, we are just few years away from becoming mere AI fodder. Our behavior will be constantly recorded and used to train them, and we are getting omnipresent dopaminergic rewards to keep us going. The resulting AI power will be worth more than gold. Advertisement companies and autocrats will pay billions. Our own behavior will be turned against us and only a few hundred chosen ones will profit.

No one really foresaw this development. In fiction, technology was often very visibly bad. There were attack surfaces to identify and fight it. You could win or lose.In reality, people are craving smartphones and social networks. For many people, giving up phone use is more difficult than giving up smoking. And people happily pay for more and more outrageous technology. The momentum and the invasiveness of this development make this so frightening. Authoritarianism will become child's play.

We have to adopt a new way of thinking, write new manifestos, to counter this threat. Technology made us more powerful than ever - with the right tools, it is easy to send encrypted messages around the globe, without leaving traces, in an instant. This was never before possible. Why are we not using this potential? Why are we letting ourselves get subjugated by addictive crap?We need to take back control - not just in meatspace, not just in cyberspace - but first and foremost in mindspace.

Again really frustrated by the state of mobile telephony in the year 2019. We are still trusting proprietary blackbox chips, that were state of the art in the early 90s, with all our mobile communications. Chips that we know can listen to us and track us all the time. Why are we not revolting?I guess we don't deserve much better technology if we fail to address the injustices that surround us all the time. We don't print emails to "save the environment" but billions of tracking devices are ok?

#XMPP is currently really split into two camps, namely #OTR and #OMEMO. Many popular messengers support either the one or the other. This is really unfortunate, because both have strong upsides. OTRv4 is really interesting and I would like to try it out in parallel to OMEMO, but I don't want to install an additional messenger for it. OMEMO however is the way to go for the majority of people who rely on their phones for mobile communication, and it is very convenient. No idea what to do 🙁

@aleks Gajim on Windows is really nice tbh, I can only recommend it. Afaik it's identical to the GNU/Linux version. But they dropped OTR-support gratuitously, which is so frustrating.

@aleks I guess that has more to do with the desktop environment than with the messenger itself. For example, my Gajim (on Debian Buster, Mate, Bluebird theme) looks much better than the screenshots from Windows.Almost looks like dino, which supposedly is fine as well, but not available for Windows... 😕

Got two used T400 laptops, sold as "not functioning". Turns out there is a BIOS password set and no RAM installed - otherwise they are in perfectly fine condition, as good as new. They will receive #Libreboot, new RAM, SSDs, new batteries, Atheros WiFi chips and #Debian Buster. Wonderful machines, still more than fast enough. One man's trash is another man's treasure 😊

@3rik @fdroidorg @torproject I just noticed yesterday that on top of that, Orbot's description inside F-Droid is horribly outdated. It must be several years old and contains many mistakes. And the list of shitty recommendations is even longer - it says you can use Tor to access Facebook when your school has blocked it, or that you can use it to watch sports at your workplace. Ofc this is technically correct, but still... 🤯

Happy 66th birthday, Richard Stallman! If you are interested in his life, you should read his biography "Free as in Freedom":https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_as_in_FreedomThe 2.0 version is available here (GNU FDL):https://sagitter.fedorapeople.org/faif-2.0.pdfIt's a very interesting read about his back story and his struggles early in life, and why he is sometimes acting weirdly. He was not happy with the first edition of the book, so version 2.0 has comments and corrections added by rms himself. True hacker style.

Controversial opinion: these days I'm coming more and more to the conclusion that Web 2.0 has failed. It is a huge trashfire.Conceptually speaking, the "old web" was providing mostly one-to-many and many-to-one connections. One-to-many: static websites, newsletters, media downloads. Many-to-one: mailboxes, comments, feedback, services.Web 2.0 introduced ubiquitous one-to-one, which made people addictive. Even worse are many-to-many connections - social media.1/

Many-to-many platforms amass a huge amount of personal data, that are apparently impossible to keep secure. Even worse, they allow the manipulation of hundreds of millions of people. The human brain is not made for this mode of communication. It cops out, ignores the consequences and indulges in feeding the world's most powerful AIs, while at the same time forfeiting virtually all control over personal data. Most of the current struggles are fought from within the system #Article13.2/

I'm absolutely not opposed to using modern technology, as long as it supports us humans and entertains us in fair ways. This is however not the current state of the world we live in.I would be interested in working on a lean tech society. Where we only use those elements that do us good, and ignore the rest. Where we strengthen our humanity and become aware of our weaknesses. We need offline time, we need devices and a net under our control, and we have to make this a new trend #LeanTech3/3
