«Revenue from paid subscriptions now account for nearly all of Spotify’s turnover, or 88 percent. Ad-supported revenue makes up a much smaller slice, but as a public company, Spotify is under more scrutiny to prevent ad blocking, piracy or anything else that might cut into its earnings or subscriber growth.» https://techcrunch.com/2019/02/08/spotify-will-now-suspend-or-terminate-accounts-it-finds-are-using-ad-blockers/#copyright #adblock

@kensanata I saw this and wonder if they're going to suspend paid subscriptions that are using ad-blockers too...

@emdeesee If you pay for the service, do they still serve ads‽

@kensanata I don't know, but I should hope not!I assume they could still detect ad-blockers though, and casting too wide a net to allay shareholder fears seems likely exactly the kind of dumb move a company might make.

@emdeesee Heh. Well, I'm not a user anyway so I don't care. I just care about adblocking! Whenever I look at the web without adblocking, I recoil in horror. What have we become‽

@kensanataThey better issue a refund for services undelivered, then.Companies are going to lose this arms race, and only customers (and the bottom line) will suffer. This is DRM all over again, except they're trying to force you to view their ads (and run their Javascript).Honestly, we need a hard push against Javascript, and a hard push against ads. Flip it around, why do we need every aspect of our lives plastered with companies trying to lift a few bucks from our pockets? When I'm getting gas, I don't need a damn TV playing ads for me. When I'm watching something, I don't want to watch an ad."Our ads pay for our existence" is a common thing. So, why are my computer's resources just automatically up for grabs by a corporation? Why is it on me (and other commoners) to validate a business model? It's a shit business model, and I'll do everything technically possible to ensure that I do not contribute to such a model. If I have to disable an ad blocker to use a website, I'll just stop visiting. The Web deserves something better than taggers-on who add nothing of value to the market.Maybe these aggressive tactics will backfire and the age of community networks and forums will return. We can only hope.
