I'm working the check in/reg desk for my day job winter conference, and my job is mostly just to check in people who already registered. We have all the badges printed ahead of time, but sometimes there's a misspelling or a registration on site, or another reason I need to print a new badge. We have a fantastic little printer for these badges. The printer is not my complaint, but Microsoft sure as hell is....

Our badges are made in Microsoft Publisher, which isn't on Mac, which is what I use.I didn't know that because it didn't say it, so I spent an hour yesterday downloading and installing ALL of Office because you also can't just download one piece of software. Microsoft makes you download and install the entire Office Suite all at once.Which I'm doing on very slow public wifi through a VPN.It took a while only for me to find out Publisher isn't there.

Luckily, I brought my old Surface Pro, but through the day I ended up borrowing Boss' computer and didn't need the Surface.Today, though, I needed the Surface because Bossman needed his computer all day.So, again, I spent an hour downloading and installing Office just to get to Publisher.Once installed, Publisher was fine, the file opened, all is good.Except the Surface isn't recognizing the printer.Note that my Mac recognized the printer fine.

I ended up spending another hour finding, downloading, and installing the drivers for the printer. Each step of this process had a myriad of various issues that I don't know how to explain and fix other than I just kept restarting the process and each time I did, it got a little further in the process. This has been a huge pain in the ass all because Microsoft SUCKS.This isn't an endorsement for Apple, just a dis-endorsement for Microsoft.

@garrett What I don't get is why do printers usually need drivers!?Windows has the SMB protocol for it and more, and everyone else has the IPP protocol. Support those and all people would have to do after purchasing your printer is plug it in.

@alcinnz I don’t know anything about that kind of stuff. This is an Epson printer that is small and perfect for badges. I really love the printer but today was a pain in the ass.

@garrett I understand. It's just that I'm just reliably frustrated that I know this stuff and the people making and setting up printers don't seem to.There's no reason for printers to need drivers. They should *just* work!
