I sympathize a lot with calls to replace cars with public transport, but..As a new parent, I've been in a few situations in the last year or so, where having to rely on any public transport solution I can imagine would be.. bad.How could public transport be designed to accomodate the following use case(s)?[cont]

@zatnosk I think you are quite right. I want to see more & better public transport in urban and rural areas, so that there are less cars. But I still see a use for private cars for exactly these reasons. As someone with a disabling chronic illness, having a car can make a big difference for doing some stuff in life. We do what we can on public transport, but there are times where having your own car is v. useful.

@zatnosk @GwenfarsGarden I think better community car rental situations, and much much lower overall car ownership, would help many use cases. The difficulty is that once someone has a car, it becomes the cheapest per-additional-trip way to do *anything*, with the result that most people with cars drive way more than is sustainable.

@artsyhonker @zatnosk this can work in an urban setting. We were part of a car club in Oxford & didn't have our own. But it was really well set up all over Oxford and affordable. The one in Sheffield is focussed around the city centre, so we would have to travel just to get to it. We then car shared our car with friends, but sadly he died. Now we work hard not to rely on it & often only use it 1-2 days a week. But we are probably outliers.

@artsyhonker @zatnosk I think if there were good car clubs everywhere, and affordable taxis, as well as public transport, it could really reduce the use of cars, as well as pollution, whilst still giving access to 'private transport' when needed.

@zatnosk @GwenfarsGarden I wonder how easy it is to set up a car club with, say, 10 other people on your street. It *ought* to be easy but I bet it's hard. Hmm.

@zatnosk @GwenfarsGarden @orbifx That doesn't happen in a vacuum either.I grew up flying back and forth across Canada a few times a year, because my parents were divorced and my stepdad got a job on the other side of the country. I hardly know my extended family on mum's side: they often couldn't afford to visit us, so they didn't. Under crapitalism, few get to choose the perfect work location and so on.

@orbifx @artsyhonker @zatnosk it's true, we do need to change our expectations. We just need to make sure that people aren't left out, particularly in rural areas or people with limited mobility etc.

@artsyhonker @zatnosk @orbifx It should be easier, but it isn't. In part because in a lot of places, people wedded to their cars but also because it's work organising it.But it has made me think. When my health improves(!), I might look into this some more and see if I could get some interest locally and see if we could expand the scheme here in Sheffield. If we had a car club car locally, we could get rid of ours, like we did in Oxford. I'll put it on my list.
