As someone living in the middle of a city, noise cancellation systems for entire rooms would revolutionize my whole life.It could block the traffic noise from the outside when you need to concentrate or sleep. But it would also allow you to watch a movie or play a game in the middle of the night, without annoying your neighbors.

@fribbledom At that scale Iโ€™d argue itโ€™s more cost effective to soundproof your room. Extra wall layers and double-glass windows do wonders!

@trinsec If you're alone, then yes. But what if you just want some quiet time with your partner or a friend? To talk, play a board game or just chill.

@fribbledom if cities were built for people instead of cars, and building codes required decently insulated windows and construction that relied on thermal mass instead of the minimum legally permissible fiberglass and drywall, it would just kind of happen

@brunoph @fribbledom but if you use noise cancellation, you can potentially have an open window AND have a silent room.

@zatnosk @brunoph Not only that, I don't even think it has to be all that expensive. I assume an array of microphones and highly directional sound emitters could do the trick in the near future. That would even allow you to watch a movie while everyone else in the room can still enjoy the quietness.

@yet It certainly would and will help, I agree. But I'm really looking forward to a bit more freedom that just that. See my other toots in this thread ๐Ÿ˜Š

@fribbledom Noise cancelling headphones solve that for me - including sleep, occasionally, though they're too bulky for that to be an ideal solution.Being free of the fartmobile drivers or other miscellaneous unwanted sonic distractions is so worth it, even aside from their audio reproduction capabilities. And no wires to get trapped beneath my elbows, or drape into the bath. Definitely one of the best purchases I've made.

@porsupah I hear you! (pun intended)I recently bought a new pair of noise cancelling headphones myself, and now I pretty much can't concentrate at work without them.

@emilyoram I've seen an installation of that scope in Tokyo before and it was rather impressive indeed. I'm sure it'll happen sooner than later.

@fribbledom Oh, crikey, yes.. they saved me at two previous gigs. One was in a large common area, with some fifty others, occasionally holding group conversations - not loudly, but, they carried well. Another was in a converted warehouse - hard walls ensured any sounds travelled the length with ease.

@fribbledom Itโ€™s doable. I once stayed in a hotel across from an airport. Like, super close to it.The distance between the double glass windows was about a foot and Iโ€™m pretty sure there was a built in system to keep a vacuum between the layers. You could not hear the planes. At all.

@fribbledom You know what also blocks traffic noise? Banning cars.Want to watch a movie with others in the room? Try headphones.Thank you, that will be 500,000 USD (consulting fee)

@fribbledom I know. In truth it's not quite so simple. Sound really wants to go through things. Have you heard about the superblocks in Barcelona? Traffic noise was a major source of motivation to close the inner streets.

@fribbledomWe have investigated the same problem at work for a project and concluded that it was not feasible. Noise cancelling headphones were the only choice.

@fribbledomI think it would also have to know where you are in the room, because to get active noise cancellation, the noise and anti-noise need to meet *at your eardrum* and that is going to be very difficult with sound propagating from multiple sources...the waves are reflecting and interfering everywhere. There's a reason they only do it in headphones, because it's already being funnelled into linear pulses.@zatnosk @brunoph

@LouksOh, I didn't mean to imply this would be child's play ๐Ÿ˜† There's a reason we don't see those products on the market just yet. But it's being worked on, and as I've witnessed myself, it's quite magical when it works.@zatnosk @brunoph

@fribbledomI can imagine! I'm thinking of walls that are actually giant arrays of piezo speakers...sounds very impressive if they're able to do it in specific environments already!@zatnosk @brunoph

@fribbledom That's why I live at a neighbouring town. I need a tram ride to go to the city, but it's calm during the day and night. The only problem are my own neighbours...
