@codesections @ZikZak @afontaine To continue on your example, you rely on this budgeting program, and one day you find a severe bug. You seek the developer but they are gone, or don't care anymore. You can't do anything about it. Maybe you also lose all your data. You are tied to something else, and thus are not free.

@codesections @Aerdan @afontaine @ZikZak You can hire developers as well :)I think we do say for other tools. At least I do :) An example for this is smartphones with non-user replaceable batteries. These harm the user and also the environment if people are forced to change phones every time their battery dies.Smartphones have much deeper issues with repair.

@ohyran @mike If you use the Maildir format, then each email is a separate file, so you can sort them into directories over time, by grepping or something.

@Ghosty In my opinion, one of the worst things one can do as a programmer, is to get oneself locked in with proprietary tools.I live with this situation at work, and it is destructive, since your fate becomes completely tied with the vendor. But, what feature does a proprietary IDE have, that does not exist elsewhere? Especially on Linux?@BradleySmall

@fribbledom Talking at work: I would have dedicated rooms for that, people would need to go in to talk.

I'm surprised remote unlocking of LUKS partitions via ssh isn't built into standard installations of CentOS.Is full disk encryption on remote servers not a common requirement?I don't know of any other way to ensure data is "wiped"/inaccessible on drives physically not under my control. Drives that may be used by others in the future.

@djsumdog That looks like a complete replacement of the initramfs.I hadn't considered that, but could work. So far, I use dracut-crypt-ssh with CentOS, and keep everything else as is.@matt

@djsumdog I think I'm going to take this route as well 😀 No need to fiddle around after every install or update, when I have a ready made that I can just copy.

@architect Agreed, all types of notifications frustrate me, mobile/desktop/browser. I can't believe why actual technical people would design things like this.On mobile, I have it to turn off automatically until noon. It has worked well for my case.

It's really heartbreaking when I see people buying huge monitors > 34", yet with low resolutions not corresponding to their size...What's the gain, other than things appearing larger?

@hund I don't know if it's a compromise. You can buy a smaller cheaper one with the same resolution, and save space on your desk.

@codesections The second one is mixing two different languages on the same line, like it's one entity. That looks ugly and confusing to me. The separation does not stand out, and I'd guess this would cause a few weird errors and unintended deletions.

Working from home, when your work development environment is Windows based is not a pleasant experience...Other than GUI everything, shift gets stuck, windows key stuck, sudden random key presses sending windows flying everywhere...

@hund Is Arch known for that? But, anyway, there could be different criteria of "best". Having more packages may not necessarily mean better. It all depends on how well they are maintained. How AUR compares with the Gentoo packages for example may also be a factor.

@hund I would deal with this by not having kids in the first place :)But, more seriously, I would not provide mobile phones until at least 15/16 of age. By then they should be able to decide for themselves.
