Recently with the Linux CoC drama, I saw several people say something along the lines of "it doesn't matter who you are."While at first this seems like a positive statement, that the person doesn't care if you're a minority, they'll accept you. However it also unintentionally excludes the possibility that they'll help you should you face discrimination. We should care. I care for the people I work with, I care about their well being.

@measlytwerpI don't know if that follows. How would a statement like this fit in: "I don't care if you are gay or straight, you should have the right to marry the person you love"More generally, I think it is possible to advocate for an inclusive environment that makes everyone comfortable—regardless of identity—while also not caring about individual identities. But I'm totally open to the idea that I'm missing something or mistaken

@codesections @measlytwerp both outcomes follow from this framing. The "... so you can do xyz freely", and the uncaring silence when that same person is faced with discrimination. Why? Because a third party doesn't have to 'care' to clobber someone's gender identity or use slurs that are second nature to them.

@codesections @measlytwerp This blindess passes the buck onto opressed people, with the 'not carer' assuming, as someone with potentially more power to change things, that this job is already done. They are choosing to be unaware of and complicit in future problems rather than use a position of privilege to actually help others.

@codesections @measlytwerp Like, instead you could:- drop the negative framing- not say anything- listen
