random thoughts:web browsers really shouldn't be as complicated as they arethe less complex a web browser needs to be, the harder it is for a company to take over the web

@pea There's a reason why I went all Web 1.0 on my website...

@pea right!? for a piece of software that could be whipped up in QT in half an hour, they sure are scarce. I share the same kinda thoughts about a lot of software ahah

@toffee tbh i'm not sure how you'd make a browser from scratch that fast unless you were using someone else's rendering engine, which doesn't really solve the problem

@hierarchon we might have different ideas of what the problem is

@toffee still, problem there is that it's basically just one Black Box Utility Library for a web browser, unless you want to actually fork QtWebkit to add some things (for example, more granular control of cookies, etc), then even past that you've got Webkit which is owned by Appleand, like, i know it's counterproductive to distrust all things by big companies, but still, megacorps are all trying to Control The User's Experience, through as many angles as possible

@pea I feel like the bulk of the issue is just tacking more and more onto http and html, rather than breaking compat completely to re-do everything from scratch (as opposed to the minor incremental breakages we have now)

@toffee I think the company I'd be Most Likely To Trust in regards to open source would be Mozilla and I'm excited to see where Servo goes but at the same time Mozilla's actual Products have broken user trust a few too many times lately

@toffee regardless of trusting certain big companies to maintain rendering engines and not others, etc, it's a problem that the web has reached a complexity where that's necessary

@pea One could argue that Google et al *want* the web and browsers to be complicated in order for there to be a substantial entry cost for potential competitors

@pea for articles really need just.1. Little menu for switching pages.2. Paragraphs with some stuff like links, footnotes, few sizes of header, bold/underlined/colors.3. footnotes(citations) at end.4. Images/videos with no options how to place other than "between these paragraphs". User-defined.5. Maybe some math stuff.RSS/Atom feeds are close enough, maybe? But for froms and shops and stuff? Wish could force *our* APIs down companies throats.

@hintss @pea That's just it, though. A lot of the stuff they're adding isn't necessary. It's just bloat designed to track the user so they can make money.Look at when the GDPR took effect. Many sites literally started loading in under a second compared to 3-5 seconds beforehand simply due to all the trackers that had to be removed.

@pea Tell me about it! I like trying to wrap my head WebKitGTK to have a better understanding of the code I run and I push others to run.Though most (but not all) of the complexity that filters into my fediverse commentary I would classify as necessary.
