Hey Town and Greater fediverse, I'd like to talk about TV. I want to see us producing independent television programming. Talk shows, fiction, sports (even if it's just the local little league or school league), news. I want to see us making things to entertain one another. I want to help create and spread these things. I want to see us sharing tips and tricks, intro bumpers, animations (2D and 3D), music. (You know how people sell video game assets on itchi.io? Why can't we do the same kind of thing with TV show assets and services? CC-BY-SA that stuff, and share your source files!) There is no reason we couldn't have something as well produced as, say, The Computer Chronicles ( https://archive.org/details/ModemsBu1985 ) with a minimum of effort. (well, there's one reason. Gary Kildall isn't with us anymore, and his insight and vision is sorely missed.) But we have enough personality out here on the fediverse that we could easily, communally, collaboratively make media that reaches beyond us. #CC #creativeCommons #media #patreon ? #LetsMakeArt #TV

@MasterControlProgram I'd love to see this, we need more DRM-free fiction!I'll be more than happy to spend my entertainment budget on you. I can offer to advertise your work to new users of Odysseus free of charge. (I worry that if I do accept payment people won't trust my recommendations)And while I've been keeping myself very busy, I want to help out however I can.

@MasterControlProgram This is something I hope to get into with my PeerTube channels. I've had a long dry spell due to issues going on in my personal life, but have started getting back into editing my footage again.

@sean @MasterControlProgram I definitely would but I'm still weird about PeerTube. I think I just don't get it. I'm concerned about uploading on someone else instance...not sure how to set up my own...not sure of the cost.

@garrett @sean @MasterControlProgram I'd say you should publish however you're comfortable. For example maybe it's more up your alley to use a static site generator to publish it with a webfeed. A.k.a. A video podcast. That's very easy to handcode, if that rocks your boat.

@alcinnz @garrett @sean I'll second that sentiment. Do what makes you feel comfortable.

@garrett @sean Storage space and bandwidth are big concerns. I view peertube as a potential distribution medium rather than as an archival platform (especially as it transcodes videos) The best video archival platform I'm aware of is http://archive.org, I tend not to stream from them though, so as not to cost them extra money on bandwidth. My plan at the moment is: - Self host a low resolution video on my personal website, in case something happens to peertube, with links to all the other canonical sources. - Post a higher resolution (but bitrate starved) version to peertube for general consumption - Post a full resolution, mid-to-high bitrate copy to archive.org - Share a copy via Dat or Onionshare bittorrent from my home network - Use a CC-BY-SA license so that other people are empowered to archive and share (and remix!) copies as well. - and, ideally, to do all of the above through an automated workflow.

@MasterControlProgram @sean @garrett I really like this workflow. I'm going to tweak it and stick it in the guide I'm writing, if that's okay? I'll DM you.

@ajroach42I wonder if #hubzilla could be useful as a website & media storage area (with fine grain ability to grant access to different stuff), hook it up to a #osada account through linked identity (think have to wait, hopefully not long, for this to work) to get a link into #activitypub without losing clone/nomadic identity abilities. @MasterControlProgram @sean @garrett

@ajroach42 @MasterControlProgram @sean @garrett @dazinism have you considered using Miro? It's basically a free, open source podcast client that can use RSS to get updates on audio/video releases that it can auto download over Torrent or HTTP.I haven't used it in awhile so I don't know if it's still being maintained. If it does, it could be a solution for working around YouTube.PeerTube is nice but feels too early for serious use.

@polychrome @dazinism @garrett @sean @MasterControlProgram This is the first I'm hearing of Miro. i'll check it out! Peertube is about 75% there. It's still about 10% too rough, IMO, but it has RSS and it's functional enough for me to use it. and it will improve.

@polychrome what do you think #PeerTube needs to be ready for serious use?#Miro was abandoned a long time ago. It's a shame, it was a pioneering project by the #PCF (Participatory Culture Foundation). I've made various attempts to reach out to the devs to find out what happened, with no results. Last release was 5 years ago:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miro_(software)@ajroach42 @MasterControlProgram @sean @garrett @dazinism
