NewPipe is a really great app, we should use it more as an example of why FOSS puts users first and proprietary software doesn't

@sir The only thing that's kinda broken at the moment is watching live streams on youtube. But apart from that, it's probably the best thing i've ever come across for youtube AND frigging souncloud :OBless that devs good soul. 🙏

@sirI really wish I could switch over completely but it still doesn't have a chronological feed.

@sirWell, I only really watch videos from channels that I'm subscribed to and I can't find them in NewPipe.Right now I use a Greasemonkey script that lets me see see a feed of locally stored subscriptions, but I'd switch to NewPipe in a heartbeat if I could actually find the videos that I want to watch.

@sirAs it is, with NewPipe I'd have to open and check every one of my subscriptions one at a time for new videos with no indication as to which might have new videos, which is a really *good* reason not to use NewPipe.

@sir yeah, except for the fact that it's obviously not finished by the fact that it crashes a significant percentage of the time I try and use it...

@Canageek you have to keep it up-to-date. Every time YouTube changes how their player works, adds more encryption, etc - NewPipe has to be manually fixed.

@sir yes, that makes sense, but you think it could fail gracefully rather than crashing...

@Canageek I think it fails reasonably gracefully, don't you get the error screen with details and instructions on reporting it?

@sir Failing gracefully would be 'YouTube has changed, update NewPipe' not 'click video, crash to home screen'

@sir @jeffalyanak not sure if you're aware of this, but you can go to Settings -> Appearance -> Content of main page and add "What's New" to your tabs, which will contain the newest video from each of your subscriptions roughly in the order you subscribed to them

@aminb@sirYeah, but because this isn't actually chronological I get many, many videos that are years or months old. The channels that I subscribe to are a mix of those that update frequently and those that don't, so that view doesn't work well for my use.

@sirSir, could you give me a good reason to switch away from my current solution (which actually solves my problem) to NewPipe (which doesn't)? You say that the software not working for my use-case is not a good enough reason to not use it? Why would I arbitrarily switch to it and make my experience a lot harder? What benefits would I hope to expect?

@jeffalyanak @aminb some day you'll learn that you're better served by prioritizing being in control and not being taken advantage of before the little things. Until then, use whatever you want.

@sir@aminbHow am I being taken advantage of with my current solution? I am *not* logging into a Google account nor using the YouTube app.

@sir@aminbIf I didn't prioritize being in control I'd just use the YouTube app and subscribe to channels through a Google account.

@sir@aminbI run YouTube in a Firefox container and rather than logging into Google I use a custom Greasemonkey to take my subscription list and build a chronological list. My subscription list stays on my end.

@jeffalyanak @sir Did you know, every channel on youtube has an RSS feed you can subscribe to :)(I don't remember the URL of the back of my head)

@aearil@sirYeah, that's what I leverage for my Greasemonkey script. Unfortunately, I don't have a mobile option that is quite as nice as that. Currently on mobile I just use the raw feed, but it's awkward to click a video and have it open in my browser. Hopefully NewPipe adds chronological timelines soon.

@sir@aminbWell, for desktop it works great. It looks and feels very close like YouTube's own subscription page. NewPipe literally won't do that, so I can't use NewPipe for that, miserable or not.

@sir@aminbI use NewPipe for casual exploration and watching videos that people link me, it just doesn't work for me for keeping up with my subscriptions without a chronological feed. Why is that so upsetting to you?

@jeffalyanak @sir i guess you could consider contributing that feature to NewPipe, given that it's Free Software :)

@aminb@sirWell, SkyTube has that feature already. Apparently the NewPipe team has been having issues with implanting it for some time now.
