@natehousley like Dubya who obtained power illegitimately and used an actual Reichstag Fire to go to war with Afghanistan and Iran? ;)

@gayhobbes yeah it’s a difference of degree but I couldn’t see even gwb pulling something out of his ass and telling his cult of followers to grab their guns and get a bunch of people killed

@natehousley buddy lemme tell ya, I remember a lot of the Bush administration and I remember a lot of people being afraid he'd do that because he's a fundamentalist. We've just applied all that fear to Trump now.

@gayhobbes it’s a good point. I just feel like we’re in a bit more of a powder keg situation in the last couple years. The Kavanaugh debate, for example, is getting pretty existential. But I guess bush stealing the election was really similar to that too

@natehousley I think we're confusing death spasms for displays of power. If things were as precarious as we feared, it would be a lot more like the Bush years were, with the entire actual election theft. At least this time it wasn't theft, just terrible turnout.

@natehousley @gayhobbes Yeah not to shit on all the people who are losing their minds about this on facebook and such, but it's just an alert systemThe government has done and will continue to do worse shit just below the radarIf we're gonna get a Reichstag fire it's not gonna be through a normal text alert system for storm warnings and catastrophes, it's gonna on the news

@natehousley @gayhobbes the thing that ramps up the danger is that things were going good economically for a lot of people when Bush was president

@stunt_bird @natehousley I mean for whom? 2002 was a down economy and a lot of those people were already suffering from Clinton's "welfare reform"

@stunt_bird @natehousley I see what you're saying but those people are mostly still fine, bunch of middle class quiverfuls are not losing their house any time soon, plus they've all got the bunker to rely on

@natehousley not what I meant, just meant I can't even bring myself to speculate what it could mean, but honestly a CW might be appropriate in general? I'm still learning the CW etiquette on here.

@gayhobbes @natehousley it's entirely possible that we are going to see a collapse of capitalism into fascism, but it'll be with the enthusiastic endorsement of the liberal center

@bezukhova I see. Yeah I’m still learning the etiquette and I’m not really sensitive to anything online so it’s a process of learning what others’ sensitivities are. Anyway yeah this alert system is disconcerting to me

@gayhobbes @stunt_bird @natehousley I mean, the danger of fascist decay doesn't stem from a mass of disenfranchised people, it stems from businesses and the slowing of the rate of profitThat's happening. The danger of a fascist government coming to power isn't, historically, that it comes on the shoulders of a popular movement, it's that it comes on the bankroll of business and, that's happening too

@gayhobbes @stunt_bird @Secondary_world I agree in the sense that it fascism isn’t a bottom-up movement but there does need to be enough people devoted enough to the cause and empowered enough to turn in their neighbors and friends. I don’t know if we’re at that point but I feel pretty concerned about like, the possibility of armed militias mobilizing themselves

@natehousley @gayhobbes @stunt_bird I would be more concerned about elements from the army and PMC groups that are already prepared to take this kind of action, particularly since they are bought and sold by the kinds of business interests we should be worried about

@gayhobbes are you saying the GOP is going through a death spasm rather than flexing their power? I don’t have a strong opinion either way but I’m interested in your perspective

@natehousley @gayhobbes @Secondary_world that’s more what I’m saying, like 15 years ago things were (aside from like 9/11) pretty stable in most people’s eyes. Now even very comfortable middle class people are in this nothing to lose mentality

@natehousley yeah, the GOP has waning support and they're running scared. That's why they're doing this shit as sort of a last ditch effort to hold on to power. I think over the next decade we're going to see a hard swing away from them. All the victories we're seeing now--what few there are--are pyrrhic.
