Did zines and articles make most anarchists into anarchists?Or did experiences with capitalism & the state + experiences with self-organisation make anarchists into anarchists, while zines and articles provided the step of helping them find a word and theory for what they already were?

@queeranarchism the latterand it's not even necessarily zines and articles, for me it was just finding an overlay for that political compass quiz giving me the nudge to look more into "anarcho-socialism" after which i discovered theanarchistlibrary and read more in-depth. which was ironic bc the overlay wasn't even well-made, it was pretty nonsensical on the upper half, but eh

@queeranarchism It was messaging that got me, but I admit this is probably just my experience as a relatively privileged person, and that the latter category is where a lot of more oppressed people would land since they have a more direct experience of that injusticeThough as a kid in school I did have a lot of arguments and feelings that I in hindsight recognize as anti-authoritarian and even anti-punitive justice, mostly stemming from my experiences as an autistic child. But they were quashed early and I "grew out of them" rather than looking for solidarity in them - again, probably due to my privilege making it easier to ignore

@queeranarchismI don't know about most, but one of my biggest goals in life (kind of by accident) is to understand as much as possible, especially in terms of other people's perspectives and experiences. Tumblr helped a LOT with that, and now im sorta anarcho sorta commie. So it wasn't my experiences that got me here, it was other people's.

@queeranarchism Theory converted me, but it was of course the experience with the state that made me receptive to it

@queeranarchism It was mostly articles and zines for me. I wouldn't have even known about it's existence if not for a series of lucky encounters. Without the internet, I would have been a shitty conservative without even realizing there was anything else simply because that's what my parents are

@queeranarchism More of the latter for me.Honestly though, it was punk music that opened the door for me. Crass and Dead Kennedy's got me pissed about the system.I started going to more punk shows, and from there I met other punk rockers who started their own communes in warehouses. Most of the communes fell apart for several reasons, though... Hard to use communist praxis under a capitalist system, especially when the cops keep coming by to shut the place down.
