This is a one-vacuum-tube ADC from...1948!The way it works is so damn clever: it's set up with an electron gun and horizontal/vertical "deflexion" plates just like a CRT TV. The beam is swept horizontally at a fixed rate. The vertical deflection is set based on the input signal. Instead of a phosphor screen, there's a metal plate with slots cut in it following a truth-table-like layout. Whenever the beam goes through one of the slots, it hits a collector plate and a high bit is sent out!
