I'm trying to take more control of my data (i.e. stop using Google for everything), so I'm trying to figure out what to do.Does anyone know of a checklist or an extensive guide to self-hosting and related things?I've looked into a few services but it's confusing, there are so many things out there. Does anyone use NextCloud?

@mprv using nextcloud for personal files (but also at work) using yunohost for personal self hosting, cloudron.io for work related self hosting. secure, signed, self hosted Email with cloudron is a piece of cake :)both Yunohost & Cloudron have an amazing community and app's list to try and find your best approach to all these questions. Nextcloud is also really cool with Davx (ex davdroid) to reclaim your contacts, calendars and have them sync with your phone.

@noorul you'll finally be able to stop that, I know how it is, I still have email at DM too, this year I'm stopping all my "shared-hosting" usage and will move personally and at work to self-hosted (work is already the case) make sure to setup SPF, DKIM & DMARC in your dns zone to have perfect emails (mail-terster is your friend)

@mprv I've been working on this since just before Christmas. I seriously need to blog it.My steps so far:* Whack farcebook, instag0rm, WhatsApe accounts (export data and save first)* Get a real email service provider (mailbox.org, in my case)* Get a 3GB free Nextcloud account hosted at hostiso.cloud* Check out MeWe and then Mastodon (Helloooo!)* Put Syncthing on all devices for a space-unlimited syncing folderPut IceCat and {f,g,m}-droid on phone* disuse fitbit tracker, export and delete fitbit acct* Use gadgetbridge on phone to get data from Amazfit bip watch without sending data to any company* avoid using GooglePloy and proprietary apps as much as possible* Use IceCat by default* Use NewPipe interface instead of official YT app (can export subs from yt)* Use MusicPiped (FOSS YT-based music app) instead of GooglePloyMoosic, deactivate GPM/YT Preemium subscription* Get an old #Thinkpad x200t laptop on ebay (Libreboot compatible), order drive rails, SSD, stylus, new battery** Install Windows XP on it to allow Computrace to deactivate itelf (OH the ignominy!!!!)** Whack WinXp with extreme prejudice, disable computrace and pseudo-disable Intel amt forever in BIOS** Install Manjaro+i3wm and live happily ever afterRefer to https://switching.social/ for more info || @switchingsocial

@mprvI think some folks are currently working on mobile connectivity. The project is bringing self-hosting of software like nextcloud, plume, gitea to ARM boards, including Raspberry Pis.@SetecAstronomy @cloud

@mprv At the moment @kemonine is working on some mobile connectivity for some of their personal needs. However, it serves up NextCloud, GPS logging and some other goodies they also want while offline. (KemoNine tends to take mini-breaks wholly offline minus a camera and Lollipop). The mobile piece is something we've been looking at while at the same time doing a lot more in the way of self-hosting "stuff". Given they have taken some pics of their hardware setup we've been posting a little more than usual to get people excited and to show how much can be done with smaller computing hardware.A lesser known detail is we are fully self-hosted on our own projects output. Our website, pleroma (mastodon), plume (mastodon blog), gitea (source code), matrix (federated chat), xmpp (jabber / federated chat), taiga (kanban/trello) docker registry, download site and more are all self-hosted on small arm boards and similar hardware. We even have a whole build network (see attached picture) for ensuring we can deliver Docker images of the various software we're using for self-hosting.We've had great success with arm boards like the Raspberry Pi 3b and 3b+, Orange Pi PC Plus, Orange Pi PC 2 and a few others if you're looking for hardware. The Scaleway arm VPS instances as well as the Amazon AWS arm instances can also be used with our Docker images. We're very focused on delivering options that can be re-mixed easily and run well across a variety of platforms, even if not officially supported πŸ˜‰For an idea on what we have documented, everything is online at https://git.lollipopcloud.solutions/lollipop-cloud/docs . We have some other items "complete" but they remain undocumented at the moment. A few of our contributors are going to be digging into things like Wallabag (Pocket/Read it Later), TT-RSS (rss), bitwarden_rs (passwords) soon.If you're curious about exactly what we have deployed hardware wise, we have a transparency report at https://lollipopcloud.solutions/page/transparency/ with full details about our deployments. We *do* have a couple "big" pieces of hardware deployed to facilitate building some Docker images but they are *not* required. We deployed them after a generous user gifted us a XEON workstation and started running into delays with builds of some rust based software. The https://photog.social Mastodon instance is also leveraging our work to host their Halcyon, Pinafore, Plume and other non-Mastodon services. They run a single arm VPS for all of their secondary services based on what we've published in our Docker registry for arm boards. As a closing thought: if you'd like to keep up on the project but only see the major news, not all of our daily posts, our blog federates with mastodon and pleroma. You can follow @cloud from here and get our news without seeing the daily happy hacking moments.@remotenemesis @SetecAstronomy

@mprv biggest tip is to take your time. I've got a mail server, this server, a nextcloud server, an rss server (miniflux) and more, and they're all great but it's been ~6 months of spacing them out and being willing to deal with each one (especially the mail server)
