It infuriates me to no end to see space exploration constantly talked about in terms of how it enables capitalist exploitation, or couched in neocolonialist language.Space is worth exploring for its own sake! It's worth learning about our universe, and where we came from! It's worth testing the limits of our adaptability! Good lord, have a little ambition!

It's incredibly frustrating to see this from otherwise extremely high-minded academics and other conceptual folks. I went to a conference earlier this year, and even the professor proposing fractional-lightspeed laser propulsion to the stars was careful to frame his work in terms of "return on investment."Look, you funky little space man, your gravity train doesn't have to return on any investment! It can just be! It's worth building for its own sake!

There is no frontier! Space is not a border to project our nationalist/fascist tendencies on to. The expanse of the universe just is, and we can explore it, learn about it, and let it test our limits, and that's totally fine! We don't have to exploit it, or put people there to exploit, or use it as a tool to exploit folks down here! And maybe by learning more about the universe, and more about ourselves, we can make life better for everyone.

@Zuph I hate this kind of thing.People obsessing about Return On Investment™ is why so much (especially in NASA) has been cancelled. Because it was "costing too much" or "taking too long". As if you can put a price and timeframe on doing things that have never been done before.Like, there was no return on investment when sending a spacecraft to Pluto, but it's still one of the most inspiring things to happen in the past few years.

@Zuph Space exploration is horrendously expensive. A few people at NASA can test the limits of adaptability; making exploitation and colonization of space profitable is what will make it happen at scale. It's not "neocolonialist" language; colonizing a dead rock doesn't displace or oppress native cultures.

@Finfell I strongly disagree that exploitation of space, and deriving profit therefrom should be what makes our expansion into space happen.Neocolonialist language is problematic in a few ways. For one, it perpetuates the oppression of people here on earth, justified by profit. For another, it ignores the fact that most of the rocks in our solar systems aren't dead, but have a story they can tell. A story that human activity is capable of destroying.

@Zuph @tan i used to be pretty down on space programs because 1. yes, i was thinking small. (i’ve since noticed i do that when i’m feeling very beaten-down.) 2. the overly-simplistic idea that “space money” could be transferred over to “food,” which isn’t how our funding systems work. and, besides, “we” can afford both things.re 1, imho this is connected to the mistaken belief that poor people can’t do anything aspirational / non-immediate-needs 😞

@alana @Zuph @tan one of the most frustrating things for me is that even if you feel the need to think of everything in material terms, space programs have been hugely beneficial. Communications technology and infrastructure, things like GPS, new materials and massive advances in medicine have all come from space exploration, and then been promptly snatched up by corporations and limited to the wealthy.

@alana @Zuph @tan further, some of the best ways we currently have to limit problems primarily affecting the working class (like climate change and sea level rise) are in space programs. Likely the best way to implement solar power in the long term is to launch swarms of satellites that beam power back using microwave lasers, which penetrate clouds and dust much better than visible light.

@ALWETP @alana @tan Right! And learning how our ecological systems operate at a fundamental level (how soils become living, symbiosis of various plants, etc) is absolutely critical in becoming self-sufficient off earth AND restoring ecosystems ravaged by climate change.

@Zuph @alana @tan Exactly! And those two goals fold neatly into one another. Frankly, we'll probably need the ability to rebuild ecosystems from scratch here on Earth if we want to repair the damage we've done. Might as well practice in a safe, controlled environment on the Moon or in orbit first. And if we do that, we can move food production into orbit to lessen our ecological impact.

@Zuph @alana @tan a lot of plastics, as bad as they can be, more efficient fuels, some materials in your clothing... Uh, oh, weather predictions and maps, advances in understanding of thermodynamics and fluid flow that have lead to more efficient energy usage. All results of the space program, property of the people, but stolen and patented for profits by a handful of people.

@ALWETP @Zuph @tan small rant: average citizens being able to experience a glimpse of “the world of tomorrow!” is so commercialized (thinking about CES). would be pretty dang cool to have that divorced from “a new gadget to aspire toward buying” .. we could aspire toward collective achievements and be better-educated about the connections flowing between industry, academia, culture and public life

@alana @ALWETP @tan Somewhat related: That we don't have cubesats with cameras circling every vaguely spherical body in our solar system is a great failure of us a species.I would have so many screens in my house just displaying a constant view of Mars or Europa from orbit.

@Zuph It occurs to me the phrase many of the threads are dancing around is "artificial scarcity." That is, we have the resources to care for earth AND explore space, but they are deliberately inefficiently distributed so neither is done.

@tricoteur @Zuph A thousand times this. We produce enough food, right now, for 10 billion people, and "can't" feed 7 billion because "we don't have the resources". The truth is, we live in a post-scarcity society for 99.9% of resources, but capital demands scarcity, so some people starve.
