@koyu @amic @espectalll > yes, someone has to make a macos distro which looks like the old macos versions, but runs the latest programsIMHO I tried elementaryOS but at the end, a Mac is a Mac. You don‘t get the same look and feel and also not the same functions (don’t get me wrong, you can do more on Linux but it is not what a Mac user wants todo) then on a Mac.

@nawi @amic linux gets my job done quicker than any operating system out there. linux is great for development, web browsing and sysadmin stuff. macos is only for someone who really needs to develop apps for apple-things and even ios and macos is dying out. you can say whatever you want.

@koyu @amic @espectalll > mean..what's the mac experience really like? .... That depends with which operating systems you grow up. If you are at an age where Linux was already at the mainstream then it is Linux for you. If you experience something like Windows Me vs. Mac OS vs. Gnome 1 it is something different.

@nawi @koyu @amic at the time you had pretty mature distros for the mainstream like Mandrake, Red Hat Linux and Caldera OpenLinux... there was even support for commercial software like Java, Flash, realPlayer, NetScape, StarOffice, WordPerfect and Corel stuff! However, Linux just didn't seem to give a significant advantage for the mainstream, Microsoft fought hard against it and it ended up being a big part and a big loser of the dot com bubble.

@nawi @espectalll @amic still doesn't answer my question. like how does the ui feel like compared to other operating systems? the ux will be always trash no matter which os you're using. i grew up with mac os 10.6 vs. windows xp vs. kde 3 and i preffered kde 3 just because the ui didn't felt so weird like in macos. windows xp just hung up too much and macos's mouse handling was just weird.

System 7 / Mac OS 8 vs. Windows 98 / Me vs. Gnome 1 and always came back to the Mac. Maybe it is simple a thing what you like todo with the machine.

@koyu @nawi @amic I mean, in universities people *may* study Windows NT, but the focus is usually on MINIX and some Linux, maybe even on Plan 9. I wonder at which levels it could end up being useful though - I actually think more simple and open computers would be best, but also that simply having a programming environment like Python, JavaScript, BASIC or Scratch readily available and along resources like tutorials helps more than what we have.

@nawi @koyu to me it's more like people have yet to figure out a balance between what people use computers for and how the UX lets them do it. I'm having a lot of ideas as of lately, and I think I'm pretty close to finding a balance, but I need to make sure they consistently apply to all current use cases as well as potential future ones.(shouldn't we stop mentioning @amic...?)

@nawi @espectalll @amic still, where's the point in using a mac? if you want to game on a mac, you can use windows, if you write stuff on a mac, you can use linux, if you browse the web you can use linux and even if you game a little linux might be for you. if you're still thinking linux is for geeks who want to customize their system down to the bottom, think twice. you can just use linux right out of the box without the need to bother about anything.

@koyu @amic I get @nawi tho. You can do all of those things, but the main issue is the defaults and the interface paradigms/metaphors. Some people feel macOS is overall more polished and consistent, and less distracting, than anything else.

@koyu @nawi @amic No, the future is whatever people make now. Linux is over in the (very) long term as it suffers from the same security and stability issues as other systems, even if it's much better handled. I suggest watching out for seL4, Fuchsia OS, Redox, etc.

@nawi @koyu @amic well, considering macOS and (GNU)Linux distros have many layers in common, it's not that much of an issue. You could just, well, tweak elementary OS to make it fit better, or see if there's something that works better for you than macOS. That said, you probably know better than anyone else if it makes sense for you.

@espectalll @amic @koyu > You could just, well, tweak elementary OS to make it fit better, or see if there's something that works better for you than macOS. Found the self destruct button very fast in elementaryOS. Less then 15 minutes after installing it on a Mac the systemd sub systems started dieing.

@espectalll @nawi @amic no, i mean something like every program runs in its own container, every program has to ask for permission to do anything (even connecting to the internet or writing to the hard disk) and so on

@koyu @nawi @amic QubesOS? It's just a "patch" looking for a compromise between current software and decent security

@koyu @nawi @amic well I'm on a Late 2009 iMac. It's the best computer for Linux I had. Full support from day 1, no proprietary blobs required. It's so good, I'm using Musl Void with Nouveau and Wayland GNOME, and nothing is going ape shit.

@koyu @nawi @amic I've tested many versions of Linux-Libre, particularly with GuixSD. It really works, like, with no issues at all.

@espectalll @nawi @amic i mean that's the time when apple didn't built hardware to force their customers on macos.

@koyu @nawi @amic I guess it no longer makes sense. But it used to be the better option if your hardware was supported, definitely more so than the hard-to-install Debian or the even worse gNewSense.

@koyu @nawi @amic whichever LTS version of Ubuntu they're able to deliver, sadly they got pretty stuck last time and released 8.0 last April based on Ubuntu 16.04. Ouch.

@espectalll @nawi @amic yeah, but if you need to run proprietary software fedora is a good choice still. flatpaks + 3rd party repos enabled with one click is great.

@koyu @nawi @amic I still pick up Ubuntu for people who aren't tech savvy just because I like dpkg/apt more, because there's more support/help for it and because it's easier for me to play around with. But yeah, Fedora is nice.

@koyu @nawi @amic in this case I'M usually the main source for support - but I can't trust on that always applying, neither I want it to.
