Real talk though, the concept of nationalizing private companies, social media and communication companies in particular, is possibly one of the most fucked ideas someone could propose."If only we could tie the bastion of centralization to the almighty government! It's not like they've ever been unaccountable before."

@dielan Maybe? Tbh their division between state and private industries is sort of unclear at times.

@sean This works if the government is YOU and ME. I'd be fine with these being public resources owned by all of us collectively and under our control, to serve us, and not the reverse. Alas, this assumption seems to only operate among people who believe in democracy, socialism, and/or communism.

@sean @bamfic it's just a kind of naivete spurred by successful instances of nationalization in other countries. however, in the us, the only good functioning public service is the usps, and these days a not-insignificant reason is because it gets so much money indirectly via amazon purchases

@sean @bamfic anyway, nationalizing is cool and all but it's very important to specify to whom, and which parts. e.g. nationalize the fiber backbone (unbundling) but not the service providers (at&t)and even then i'd argue for municipal control, reallyplus for the people who are all "but the govt can spy on all traffic then!" i just say that they already do that right now, so normalize encrypting everything in transitheck, give the internet over to usps
