Which ad blocker do you use on Android? I've used blockthis until now, but I've heard good things about Blokada, too.

@rixx I'm using the brave browser, so no need for additional ad blockers.

@Kiki Ah, cool! I use my phone both with its browser, and with its apps, so I still need an ad blocker apart from the things included in my browser.

@rixx I think that when you set brave as your default browser, it also gets chosen as the browser for opening web pages in-app, if that is what you mean.

@Kiki Huh? Can't apps make network requests on your phone? Apps don't have to use the browser (at least on my phone, that would be way too restrictive for me), so they can and do display ads themselves. Applying a nice DNS block stops them.

@rixx Aaaaah, now that's where we misunderstood each other! Sorry :D I was just thinking about the display of web content. like clicking a link in an email. But what you're actually searching is software that disables in-app ads, like in games, right? Sorry, no experiences with that :/

@rixx it's superior if you have root, I think, since it doesn't require you to run a local VPN server (instead it uses /etc/hosts).The VPN-based ad blockers have the issue that you can't connect to a second VPN on top of it (also: persistent notification, slightly more battery intensive, ..)

@l3viathan Yeah, the things I'd do if I had root … sadly, that resulted in several boot loops. Good to know for the future!

@eris2cats You misunderstand, I wasn't asking for a browser ad blocker, I was asking for a system ad blocker. DNS66 fits my use case nicely though.

@cherti I should start using template responses for repetitions like these, but: I wasn't asking for my browser. Using DNS66 now, which is wonderful, open source, and on f-droid.

@rixx Yeah, saw that I misunderstood what you were looking for after I already tooted. So far I mostly just don't use apps with ads, but maybe I should try DNS66 regardless for the few I have...

@rixx Last release of DNS66 was 2017-11-26 and only 8 minor commits since then, which makes it somewhat undesirable for me.

@rixx Also checkout Netguard, more or less a firewall to forbid certain apps to connect to networks. Unfortunately you can't run both Netguard and DNS66 at the same time as far as I know, and I personally find Netguard more important.

@rixx Accidentally I installed #Blokada just today after I came across @kuketzblog's https://www.kuketz-blog.de/blokada-tracking-und-werbung-unter-android-unterbinden/So far it seems to work (with the default blacklist) and keeps nagging about blocking one specific request, now I just want to know what App actually keeps making that request..

Only recent years, I am able to us AdAway with rooting. This is simple app which block ads access on host file. Light weight.Blokada was once very active in adding ads list etc. You can choose Blokada and Netguard.I recommend you to AdAway if device is rooted.@rixx
