To follow up on some toots this morning, I want to layout how I think about privacy I terms of what I'm doing for it in my software development. The primary action of which is simply to release as free software, so you know just how good a job I'm doing at this.

I've been working on webfeed support (though the last chunk of work ended up being harder than it should be) because that tech is needed. The alternatives are either to centralize OR to waste people's time, neither of which is acceptable. That work would then naturally lead into my take in personalized suggestions: your most frequently seen unvisited links. And also I've been watching some work in WebKitGTK and soon I should be able to integrate content blockers like @aral 's Better.

But the next thing I'm really keen on doing is to implement an excellent bookmarks interface people would actually use. One that does the organizing on your behalf, who's organizational is flexible enough to get out of date, and barely adds anything to Odysseus's chrome.Plus I want to help people whatever they want from their bookmarks because then they can better help each other find interesting stuff online.

But what really motivates me is the concept of "federated search". I want to get rid of the concept of a default search engine. You'd search all bookmarked search engines simultaneously!Kinda like Searx, but easier and more loosely coupled from the search engines. By being part of the browser and built upon existing open standards.I envision that these would be smaller domain-specific search engines which would be easier to publish peer-to-peer.

@alcinnzYeah that's exactly what I dream of too, not only should the network ensure anonymization but searching on a constantly changing subset of instances makes you harder to track!

But in doing this work I've begun to realize that the approach of content blockers are unsustainable. They're a necessary stopgap.Browsers need to be able to draw a better line between good websites and bad ones. And for that to happen The Web MUST change. So I'm creating Memex to argue that this change isn't scary.

In conclusion:Privacy must not conflict with usability, because then we won't achieve it. Instead we must use it as a constraint to fuel our creative juices and thus deliver better experiences. Also I avoid integrating any specific websites into Odysseus, I just recommend them. And I avoid requiring the web surfer to choose singular websites, I prefer to let them choose multiple. If I do anything else I worry I'm just driving centralization.

@alcinnz I fully agree. But I also think we should consider something else: The "current web" is extremely much focussed around the idea to "get things for free" (as in free-of-charge). This, in example, also makes it extremely difficult for people who seriously are, in example into media and reporting to have some way to fund their work. In many situations, advertisement and tracking seem the only business model that at least somehow works. So, browser should change, but we also should ...

@alcinnz ... strive for a web which is more "fair" and less consumer-centered. I'd also hope for, say, media workers and reporters to be able to work without depending upon visitor counts or "page hits" in the way this currently happens. Again, we possibly need to get away from "free-beer" culture in some way.

@alcinnzI wonder if searching everywhere risks to mean being tracked everywhere...

@Shamar Between the Open Search standard and my UI designs, there's a simple fix for that: filter down which sites you search by tag.

@z428 @alcinnz I wonder if the problem is people wanting contents for #free or people with too few resources to pay for valuable contents.Because not all free contents are worth their price and not all valuable contents are produced for #money:- why there MUST be a business model?- why people don't have enough resources to be liberal, in a world with waste and surplus?Do we need to change people or to replace #Capitalism?

@Shamar I don't think there must be a business model. But I want something that is "fair", and we should by then fix things first. If people, right now, depend upon paid work in order to earn a living, and if their work happens to be journalism, it's a pretty unfair move to expect the outcome of their work to be available "for free" (as in "unpaid"). If we want that, we should make sure they still can in some way survive *before* that - because otherwise it's still just about ...@alcinnz

@Shamar @alcinnz @z428 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maslow's_hierarchy_of_needsthe goal is always to fulfill one or more of these needs. an alternative system must do all of this at least as well or better than capitalism. starting from the bottom you need housing, energy, food, safety, &c. which can be provided in a way that doesn’t incur recurring costs. markets can provide the materials, but we do want to avoid being in a position where we are targets for value extraction. https://social.sunshinegardens.org/media/a67033c6-64b0-4c3f-8268-aa5e98edc14b/file.jpg

@Shamar ... making sure *taking* is possible, not *giving*. Right now, in a lot of situations, working on #SoftwareLibre or #CreativeCommons or #LibreMedia is not a freedom but actually a privilege not everyone can afford. Let's make sure it's not a privilege anymore *at first*, then, *before* "fixing" the web and making their current mode of survival practically impossible. 😉 @alcinnz

@xj9 @shamar @alcinnz @z428 >Implying reasoning works. >Implying Xanadu will ever become real after the hobbyist geenie is out of the bottleWanna go capitalist? Demand the freedom to handle money without getting blackballed from banking like Alex Jones did. That should be your number one demand before you go over to change the way the Internet operates economically. Otherwise just forget about what I have written and try to figure out a way to teach browsers what a good website is.

@xj9 Yes, fully agree. I still and now fancy some of the ideas behind a "universal basic income" as one possibility to make economic survival possible and give people the "option to say 'no'" in terms of work too, which seems an important precondition for any sort of freedom beyond that. Not sure whether it's the best idea out there, however.@Shamar @alcinnz

@z428 @alcinnz @Shamar i don’t think UBI will work because the people still won’t own the productive resources that they depend on. the approach that i’m interested in pursuing is making microgrids affordable. food, energy, and housing coops that groups of working class people can build together to liberate themselves from wage slavery.

@xj9 Yes, I also know that quote that UBI in a capitalist age "just will keep people from burning down your factories" while not introducing fundamental changes. That's why I am looking into / for different approaches, as well. Curious to see what's out there. 😉 @alcinnz @Shamar

@z428I think a better model is "universal basic services" because it subverts the market but also ensures a bare minimum standard for what people need to keep the social fabric of society together in concrete terms instead of "oh the market will decide" and then suddenly everything costs more.Things like housing, power, shelter, healthcare, education, etc could all be a part of that as a right.@xj9 @alcinnz @Shamar
