Ockeghem's melodies are incredible. They're so weird and jagged and the rhythm is all over the place, common devices like imitation are hidden and changed ever so slightly so that it never becomes fully comfortable. The climaxes of voices are arranged in a staggered fashion and never fit together. It would probably be wrong to refer to him as the last medieval composer, but after his death there is definitely a sense that a great deal has been lost to music.
